I've a couple of really, really annoying insect bites on my leg, that are just begging to be scratched, knowing full well that doing so will only make them worse

Antihistamines aren't really cutting the mustard

Light a match or hold a lighter for a minute and then just singe it, the itch will go away.

Sounds weird I know, but an instant, short-term treatment is to get a fingernail and press a 'cross' directly onto the area that's stinging. Vertical, then horizontal (roughly) if that makes sensense. Trust me this isn't an old wives tale. As a former military medic this works brilliantly!
