Just about to head off down the waterfront and see her sail beneath the 3 forth Bridges and out into the north sea. What a wonderful day for the royal Navy.

Sure you weren't on the Lusty? (See what I did there) I've heard morale is at an all time low, loads sticking their notice in, really bad state of affairs. From what I understand it's really changed. (Life in a blue suit jack) spent the best part of my career in Rosyth, Gladyer Inn, DYC and Lorenzo's, wouldn't change it for the world.

A good proportion of the money spent building it has kept British workers in employment providing the skills and materials need to build the craft,,,, This allows those workers to spend their disposable income on services and goods from British companies that employ British workers which in turn helps maintain job security and the economic cycle of our nation ,,,,

Is that such a bad use of public money....?

And it's one of the few companies that employes people in economically deprived areas and actually exports to the rest of the world. Of course some people would rather give people hand outs than the dignity of work.

Exactly this!!! ! I'm university educated. Served in the RAF. I certainly wouldn't describe myself as think, chavvy or a Mong.

Narrow minded bigoted people need to learn not to tar everyone with the same brush

I've met many uneducated and extremely unemployable people who have been brought up on private estates.

Council estate does not equal - uneducated and unemployed. Just as private estate does not equal brain and a job.

Absolutely. Not fully functional for at least 5 years yet. Complete waste of 6bn, given there's two of 'em.

Whoever got interviewed yesterday on it hit the nail on the head - paraphrasing of course - but in short said it was effectively a massive cock display for the Government.

It's not tho is it. We've had a royal Navy for hundreds of years and we need new carriers. Unfortunately the corbynite lefty mob don't seem to realise we need the royal Navy for our own protection and for use of force should it be needed.

If a war came I'm sure you'd be the first one to ask someone to protect you as corbyn will only be able to write a strongly worded email to rebuff the use of force against us.

Cost issues aside and what we should or should not actually spend the money on, it takes years to design, build and then commission a ship.

Military ships take even longer due to the advanced nature of the systems involved and the fact that they have to be more robust in certain areas compared to your average container ship.

I think HMS Ocean is a good example, she was designed and built using more commercial rather than military design and construction techniques and as a result her service life is expected to be a lot shorter than a standard RN build.

Thought that's what you might say.

We're an island nation, heavily dependent on maritime trade. A strong Navy and the ability to project power is important due to that.

I'm not saying this ship is necessarily the best way to do that, but there's not much point having effective internal security without comparable external security.

"When she came in she made spice island look like a model village"

Sure did, we were in the Still and West on Saturday. It would have been amazing to see from there! I sailed out on board Ark Royal a few years back, but wasn't allowed on deck during the transit through the harbour.

They did "Britain's got talent" when i was aboard. The village people were fucking amazing! Came down the fwd lift back lit to into of "young man", then skipped through the crew to the stage at the after hangar where they then performed "in the navy".... possibly..... i had hung one on....
