Do people actually eat their placenta once they've given birth? Surely that's classed as cannibalism?! I have seen a dog eat their placenta when giving birth however humans not so much?!

I can remember it was the thing in the 1970s. My sister in law did it with my niece.

Only because we don't have predators waiting to kill us anymore. Animals only eat after birth to hide the fact that they have had young.

Is there a way to eat it or do they just guzzle it up uncooked?!

Back in fashion again apparently

I had the misfortune of coming across an article on it the other morning which almost made me lose my breakfast

Why are you asking. Fancied a bit of placenta for dinner?

It seems to be the in thing around here. Some women have their placenta made into small capsules to make it 'nicer' to take.

I know a couple of people who have done it. supposed to be really good for your body as very nutritious... would I do it? I don't think so... but I wouldn't call it nasty or weird either...

It's like liver. It's incredibly nutritious, full of iron etc. People either fry it up or have it made into capsules to make it easier to take. It's definitely becoming more en vogue.

Not for me, as wacky and hippie some of my ideas might be

Placentas are one of the most amazing organs ever I learnt so much about them, as you have too, being a midwife they are the babies life support system so full of nutrients and goodness but I certainly would not want to eat one

My biology teacher at school ate hers.

She was weird though. Once told the class that if it was up to her she would bring her husband in and show us how sex really worked without the need for diagrams or pointless videos

Limbo

I seem to remember watching a TV show years ago where Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall made pate out of a woman's placenta.

I wouldn't have baulked at trying it, and it probably would have been a huge improvement on the hospital food, but honestly, getting down to cooking soon after giving birth wasn't at the forefront of my mind ...

People bite and chew their nails, without risk of arrest for cannibalism.

A world of my own

After giving birth all I wanted was ice cream. Each to their own though. It does seem to be the latest trend every few years.

My wife is a mid wife. By law they have to now offer it to the mothers. After the birth.
