I was having a discussion in the office today with a Youngster who had never heard of CB radios. I explained the system.

It got me musing - Fabbers what was your Handle?

village between York and Hull

It was a good time in the 80s with CBs, used to go to the secret meets etc.. was a whole new world to a young teen. Once they made it legal it died!

We used to go to a mate's house back in the 80's because he had a CB radio set up in his bedroom. One of the things I remember him saying was "How many candles you burning" It's stuck in my mind ever since.

Handle: Sparky. I was very active in Evesham but when I moved to Cheltenham, there was a twat with a kilowatt burner, living nearby, so I couldn't get out. Eventually gave up.

AM was fun and 'naughty' but FM just opened up the hobby to a lot more people. Had about 400 local contacts in my log book.

It is more likely that mobile phones made CB largely redundant, rather than legalising making it less popular.

I think it's starting to make a bit of a comeback. Practical Wireless or Radio User magazines sometimes review the latest radios. My Icom R70 reciever has the fm option and I sometimes hear breakers with my indoor loop antenna although it is very directional so I don't often hear both sides of the conversation.

Between natural disasters and terrorist attacks I think we should all have a cheap cb radio tucked away somewhere and everyone in the house should know the basics on how to use one. Just incase we lose mobile phone coverage. My personal opinion they could still save lives.
