ye i can imagine he'd b quite hit and miss, i saw him with dirty preety thing's a couple of times, and i didnt think he was that gd.....but saw him at reading with the libertines last year and he was on top form....also got quite a few live E.P's and that of the lib's and scratchyness is wonderfull.....i also love how the lib's recorded live, as opposse doing all the instruments and voice's in seperate recording rooms. so i think i like that sound....also mick jones done a fantastic job at producing the libertine's sound.....so he's in my top 5 if not for skill....for romance ha ha

Obviously creating lists of guitar hero’s will always be somewhat biased on the listeners affiliation to the music their chosen favourites compose and play rather than a pure measure of their technical excellence …….

As such I would favour Michael Schenker in his early UFO days,,,, even though I fully accept he like many others, would never have got of the ground had it not been for great trailblazers like Jimmi.Hendrix Jimmy Paige, Rory Gallagher, Jeff Beck, BB King etc as well as many others already mentioned in this thread, who have undoubtedly all been vastley influential shaping the aspirations of the subsequent generations of guitar gods who in many cases have honed and advanced their superior skills.

In the field of Classical guitar playing, two names stand out for me as guitar icons….. Andrés Segovia and Julian Breem

Anyway if you want too, you could easily waste your time doing something far more productive than checking out the following clips

A guy in his bedroom totally owning many so called guitar hero’s with his astonishing technical mastery of rock axe styles…

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m7Jh1BV1EOc

Same guy in his bedroom spliced with clips of 3 other guys in their respective bedrooms, also owning many so called guitar hero’s for technical excellence…..

These four geezers between them, individually and collectively have over 160 million hits on youtube playing their slant on Pachelbels canon in D……

According to Wikipedia Eddie Van Halen isn't actually his name in any event.

I hereby nominate Edward Lodewijk as a guitarist of some note.

Ok there are so many great players and all different genres so I'll stick to rock cosso far I do t think anyone has mentioned George benson - the man is a jazz genius on guitar. Fir the record I bloody hate jazz but can appreciate tbe musicianship.

1 Carl Perkins (50's)

2 Jimi Hendrix (60's)

3 Eddie Van Halen (70's)

4 Joe Satriani (80's)

5 Slash ( although it could be me!!)

I've chosen this bunch because they spawned tbe largest number of imitators as they innovated new tecniques or well to be honest Slash is a throwback - all this is my opinion and it's quite right tgat nit everyone has tbe same opinion - but bear in mind if you disagree with my opinion it makes you wrong !! Loll

lol i dont think any guitarist would rate himself in the top 5 ,i didnt miss your point i didnt see it...what measure is there to decide top 5 ,speed of run ,writing of great riffs, playing it on fire or with it behind your neck ?

Its personal perception, for me GB as you said "is good" the "but" you put after is just your opinion as i think his work with sinatra and 53 year career as a top multi grammy winning Jazz guitarist did enough to be in my list ,for you not ,there is no definative standard as to greatness on guitar or any other instrument.

so tell you what leave him off your list

a man after my own heart. you are wrong of course, but at least you know music. doing definative work does'nt make a guitarist great IN MY OPINION. though it could make my top five FAVE guitarists. that mark knopfler is a better guitarist than GB is beyond bedate, and that is my point. two lists, one fave, one top

And of course on both counts it does not include the greats that we have missed and never heard,or obscure greats like livemore who shuns conventional avenues and just plays for himself and for fun when he fancies it,or even segovia as he is not in our fave genre perhaps.

Shame some of Setzer's best recorded work was actually Dave Edmunds or Billy Murray (h'allegedly, m'lud)....

The problem with Chuck Berry is that he's only number 4 in the list of Chuck Berry style guitar players, behind Keith Richards, Dave Edmunds and Rosetta Tharpe.... For about thirty years he's been that scariest of things, a tribute act to himself...

Costa Blanca Spain...

1. Eric Clapton.

2. Ritchie Blackmore.

3. Carlos Santana.

4. Paul Kossoff.

5. Joe Bonnamossa.

Others worth a mention. Gary Moore, Mick Ronson, Mick Box, Jimmy Paige, Rory Gallagher, and not forgetting George Harrison who was the most under rated guitarist of his generation.

No doubt some will disagree but they are my favourites.

My 5 personal best guitarist (not necessarily the greatest of all time)

1. Keith Richards (Stones)

2. Peter Green (fleetwood mac)

3. John Martyn

4. Eric Clapton

5. Jimi Hendrix

(6.) Buddy Holly

But there are about another 20 I could name that I love!!.... But they are probably my top inspirations!

Buckethead is about ten times the guitarist Slash is! Slash has made a career out of a couple of blues scales and the intro to Sweet Child of Mine, which is that difficult even I can make a half decent fist of it!

Slash is more about attitude than actual ability. He looks cool as fuck but his playing is nothing staggering. My son is 11 and can play pretty much the whole of Appetite For Destruction note for note...

Bang on there. Playing endless sweep picked arpeggios is actually quite easy and even if you make a mistake who's gonna notice 1 note when you're playing 900 a minute?!

One or two notes played with feel and perfect vibrato is far more difficult to achieve.

So many axe men, and although I love nearly all of them, take away their amps and peddle effects and they suddenly become a lot less...

If you all want to hear a real rock guitar hero listen to and watch this!

Acoustic guitar, no backing, no effects peddles and every note clear as a bell!

Then ask

I have to agree with most of the above names with the exception of Slash. I'm a big fan of G n R but after seeing them live on many occasions in the 90s I've been very dissapointed with Mr Slash. He's either not very good at playing a guitar or his alcohol / drug intake before a gig is a little on the high side! The iron maiden trio, eddie van halen and Angus young are by far the best I've seen live by a long long way

Exactly.

Electric guitar is the easiest instrument going to play really fast, because of the sustain, amplification etc. it can still be impressive, I guess, but I personally think it's a poor way to judge the best.

Saxophone players, violin players, even acoustic guitar players have to display far more skill and technique to play lightening fast stuff, as it's so much harder to get a sound out the instrument, especially playing difficult stuff.

No electric guitar impresses me with speed - far prefer the likes of Peter Green, BB King and Dave Rawlings, who have great feel.

London

1. The pentatonic bluesies

2. The major scale janglies

3. The claw hand acoustic fingerpickers

4. The tapping modes shredders

5. The 50s jazz players who technically piss on everybody else but you couldn't listen to their music

Agreed. There's always the 'how much is the guitarist and how much is electrickery?' question.

Hmmmm, I only partly agree. It takes a lit of time and patience to learn how to play fast, especially if you want to be able to do it cleanly. The trick is really to be able to put it into context and make is musical and good to listen to. Gary Moore was excellent at it, he could play one or two beautiful notes with feel and perfect vibrato followed by a passage full of fast and aggressive pull-offs and hammer-ons that would make the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end. Players like Herman Li put a lot of hard work into technique but seem to have missed the importance of melodic content.

I take your point but it seems to me there's a misplaced general assumption that the ability to play fast and loud means you can play well.

It's hard, I won't deny it. I can do it and do when I'm playing in my metal band, but we choose songs that we like for their melodic content opposed to outright flashy playing. Synister Gates of Avenged Sevenfold is a prime example of a very technical player with good melodic sense. He can throw out fast sweep picked arpeggios but they have real meaning within the song, give the song 'Lost' a listen and you'll see what I mean.
