You could even get away with a tablet these days if all you're planning is a little web browsing and emails.

The Intel NUC is a tiny PC that can be hooked up to a tv and used in the living room without seeming out of place. They're pretty cheap too.

This. If you aren't doing much get something as small as possible, maybe even consider a laptop. I'd still recommend a small SSD for the OS and applications though as it makes using it so much more pleasant.
