Investigators searching for Madeleine McCann are examining a report from India that a young girl matching her description was spotted in the market of a Himalayan city.

The Chandigarh Tribune said that a British woman had seen a youngster bearing a remarkable likeness to Madeleine who disappeared four years ago. She would now be eight years old.

Clarence Mitchell, spokesman for Madeleine’s parents Gerry and Kate McCann, said: 'Our private investigators are aware of the reports from India over the weekend about a possible sighting of Madeleine.

'We are liaising with the Indian authorities over the incident and await the results of the DNA test.'

Call me Mr Pedantic, but doesn't a DNA test require a subject from whom DNA can be extracted from? And if so, the Indian authorities must have this child in custody, and if that was the case, wouldn't the McCanns have been shown a photo of the girl and be on the first plane over there?

Also, releasing all these so called sightings of her only spurs her captors to spirit her away to somewhere else - of kill her.

There's no mention of this story on the BBC so I'll treat it with a huge dollop of sceptism.

I truly hope it's her and if not, one day she is found.

But I've always been of the belief that she died on the night in question and the circumstances still point to the parents that left her and the twins, on their own, for 10 nights running...... yes thats right....... 10 nights on their own, whilst the parents sat drinking and eating with their 'mates'.

If it is her, I would hate her to go back to such stupid and selfish parents immediately, possibly after parenting classes and some strict supervision by Social Services.

But like I said, I do really hope its her or they find her soon.

Call me a sceptic, but it could also be "engineered" to bring the case back to the fore and get everyone looking again! First time I have seen the McCanns not really upbeat about a sighting!

Personallly, I don't think she will be found! She is too recognisable with her eye pattern. I cannot believe, after all the publicity all over the world, that anyone seeing a small white girl new to the neighbourhood wouldn't have spotted if it were her!

God I hope I'm wrong, but I suspect she is lying in a shallow grave, not too far from where she was taken...

exactly - if she were to be found, would she go back to her family? After all if it happened in the UK ALL the kids would be taken off her.

I genuinely hope I am one day proven completely wrong regarding Madeline McCann, but from the day she disappeared I have held a very clear belief that she is dead, and has been dead since earlier in the day when she allegedly vanished.

I too think she died not long after she was taken but I've never suspected her parents of anything other than bad parenting.

Pure speculation, but does anyone else find it odd that this is the one situation that the News of the World didnt hack into? One that may have helped.

Had they done so and provided concrete proof one way or the other would they be forgiven, justfified for their methods?

Like Jane, I have had "thoughts" of it happening earlier in the day and that the parents were involved, but I usually put that to the back of my mind as "no parent would really do that!"

I cannot believe that the police did not do blood tests on the Twins to see if a sedative had been used. I believe it was so that the McCanns could go out and know the kids wouldn't wake! It wouldn't have been difficult, they are both doctors after all. It would also explain why Maddy didn't wake and attract attention when she was taken.

Then there is the thought of why the "abductor took an older girl, when there were two babies in the same room! Babies would be much easier to sell than a girl with memories! Nah! I believe there are too many unanswered questions about the circumstances to be as straight forward as an abduction!

It seems a fair skinned, blonde haired, blue eyed girl has been found in a Roma camp in Greece with 'parents' to whom she has no DNA connection.

Can we just give this child to the McCann family and call it quits, the equilibrium of the universe having been restored?

would the child have to be stabbed in the eye with a biro first, just for that authentic look?
