Dolly Parton

Angie Stone

Patcy Cline

Mahalia Jackson

Ella Fitzgerald

For no other reason that I love their voices.

Well, Dolly apart that is - she is also a fantastic lyricist (and sometimes a lot of those lyrics are autobiographical)

Coat of Many Colours, Smoky Mountain Memories and even Jolene are all based on real life events.

Judie Tzuke, but only ever the one song from her.

Amanda Marshall - such power in her vocals.

Katie Melua - a voice like velvet

Oleta Adams - best soul female voice I've ever heard, apart from Aretha Franklin

Aretha Franklin.

Randy Crawford recorded a great version too, but don't think she released it as a single in the UK....I have a USA press of it.

The whole Eva Cassidy thing confuses me a little, she did have a very nice voice, but to be honest no-one wanted to know her when she was alive....her career was very stop-start.

The vast majority of material she recorded were cover versions of other peoples songs.

But each to their own....

In second to fifth places are -

Kate Bush

Sandy Denny

Joni Mitchell

Dusty Springfield

But at Number One for ever, the amazingly wonderful -

JUDEE SILL

And I wonder how many of you have heard of her? You should try to get hold of her second album, "Heartfood", and listen to a track called "The Kiss" - it will break your heart.

The fact that she didn't compose her own songs doesn't make her less of a singer. More in fact as the songs weren't composed especially to suit her voice, and she had to find her own insights into the songs. Her transformation of "Over The Rainbow" was pure genious. I'd bet that more people know her version than the original by now.

The fact that she wasn't recognised at home but has become a houshold name in Britain, wasn't her fault. There are hunreds of people who have found recognition in foreign countries, from musicians to actors, chefs, artists....
