Forum watching & dynamics - a psychologist's dream? :-)

Jump to newest

By (user no longer on site) OP

I'm no psychologist at all but at at times I find the forums an interesting place to just 'people watch' - am I alone in this?

I guess they're like a little microcosm of real life - watching as everyone goes about their business and how they interact with each other can be quite fascinating I think!

Who's flirting with who, who's passive aggressive, who's white knighting, who's empathetic, who's a right softie at heart, who's an attention whore (*guilty, m'lud!), who's got a heart of gold ... the list is endless. It's like a soap opera at times!

If you don't already do it, take some time out to observe what's going on, the games being played and how different people or groups are treated - it really can a be insightful glimpse into human behaviour!

I like to treat Fab as a bit of escapism and a diversion from everyday life and I guess that's probably true for most of us individually.

Collectively though Fab is a mix of very diverse and different personalities with a common interest and it's intriguing when we all mix in the forums!

Anyone else fascinated by this? Or just me?

I find OP that in comparison to when I used to post quite a bit I've cut down quite a lot and just browse the forums/observe more now without posting much. Over time you learn and figure out peoples patterns and opinions on the forums from every category from who the relaxed and laid back folks are to who is just a full on arse hole who you just avoid talking with and if they start some shit then just tell em to fuck off.

what I find more interesting about lurking too is that you can figure out what you want to discuss and talk with other posters with. Don't get me wrong there are more than enough nice people on here but what I find off putting about posting on just normal everyday subjects/threads is that they can be going al right then some one makes one comment or joke etc then all hell breaks loose and it's a full on argument/back and forth where as it could have been avoided or was just not necessary/not the time and place to talk like that? What can you do though eh humans are unpredictable that way it's kind off the whole interesting shift and change in our psychology like how you brought up.

I love the forum, but I sometimes forget that I lurk far more than I participate (unless it's a music thread!). I really should change that!

It is fascinating and you get to 'know' the forumites, whether that's how they actually are or what they choose to project, who knows. It keeps me entertained

Yes it's interesting, you see patterns that are representative of the wider world. For example, women will tend to support other women whilst men turn on other men deliberately in many cases.

I will add some more now Yes it is fascinating and how predictable some people are even if they dont think they are.

Its just like any social situation where a group of people from all walks off life come together.

Some things do humour me. I make my own entertainment.

You can't beat a good white/dark knight. It's like watching virtual chess as you see them burning the bridges trying to paint their "prey" in a corner. Then when they're all cockt and think they're in there prey get away. And then abbligatory "where are the genuine women/when did fab become fabbook" threads appear.

do you find it interesting at times how a subject/thread can be going light hearted then all off a sudden it some how takes a different direction and changes the subject on to something completely different? Forumites have different outlooks/attitudes or personalities but similarities too I've noticed which either stay the same or over time change. it's always something new to learn or which you find one sticks around and observes the different forum topics every other day and the shift in the general morale off most off the regular users.

aaaah I see, so in a sense from a psychological point off view you like to ask the ambiguous questions in order to get more clearer definitions or explanations off people to figure out where one is coming from? It doesn't make you naughty I would say it makes you more curious or you like quisitive. Either that or you just like to subtly mess around a bitand see what surprised or unexpected reaction off confusion you might get off people.

I find the forums fascinating. I have a really good memory and seeing the changes in stances based upon who a person is interacting with amusing to say the least. I like seeing how a forumite develops also.

The one thing I do dislike will be those who assign their narrative to others in a poor Psychology 101 attempt.

I don't have a neurotypical way of viewing things and know I am not alone in that but I guess people interpret others how they wish. *shrugs*

But yeah, you're not alone Puck!

I used to, but I don't pay a whole lot of attention to it these days.

It's interesting but unsurprising.

Do you remember that money I lent you a while ago...well it's time to pay it back

You have gone quiet. Are you asleep or lurking reading all of the replies that you stirred up?

I've never studied psychology, sociology or any of the human sciences but I do enjoy people watching generally so the forum proves fruitful for a digital version of that. I read a lot more than I post and also have a pretty good memory so the forums are entertaining and infuriating in equal measure, which means they are innately fascinating. Especially when the people who have studied or are knowledgeable about such things throw a thought grenade into the middle of the thread just to see what happens. The buggers.

There are a lot of facts about life that make some people deeply uncomfortable when you present them. I find it amusing to see the reactions.

First rule of politics... Don't tell people what they don't want to hear... Especially snowflakes, their heads explode

I tend to read much more than I post, and do enjoy people watching. People in general are fascinating.

Though, apart from a few, I tend not to remember what individuals have posted previously.

Most of the time I prefer not to get embroiled in arguments on here, and stick to the more fun frivolous threads. Though the arguments can be fun to read

It's a fascinating place. I watch more than I contribute but that's mainly because there can be a bit too much confrontation, drama, whatever you wish to call it and I'm just not interested in that. I just pop in and out when the mood takes me. The forums make me tut to myself at times but they also make me laugh a lot.

maybe all it needs is a little bit off the old brain juice and that ought to get the old memory kick started and up + running again good as new...

Dan, absolutely.

I find the interactions here compelling -- wonderfully and hideously, in near equal measure.

Not only do I people-watch but I have honed learning/thinking from some of the discussions and disclosures here too - and not just from those that agree with my general outlook. I have also learned more about myself, again the good and the bad.

Truly fascinating, and terribly phone-battery draining.
