I know nobody is keen on the idea of dying but there are some people who I just feel are just so full of life you can't imagine them ever dying cos of their lust for just being here - yet its inevitable theyre gonna go soon too. Rolf Harris and Bruce Forsythe being two of them. Also Patrick Moore, David Attenborough and Dennis Healey. Such legends in our time.

Good lord I feel positively maudling now!!

I know he's not dead, but Saturday night TV is really not the same without Michael Barrymore. If one entertainer was gauranteed to lift my spirits and get me laughing it was him. Fabulous sense of humour and it's such a shame his career was hamstrung by one night of madness.

thora hird - makes me laugh, makes me cry

the 2 alan bennnett talking heads monologues 'a cream cracker under the settee' and 'waiting for the telegram' reduce me to tears everytime i watch them

the bit in 'waiting for the telegram' where she talks about her soldier boyfriend going off to war literally had me bawling - just a superb portrayal

les dawson also - remember reading his autobiography on holiday and being howling laughing 1 minute and crying the next - am sure the other people round that pool must have thought i was 'unstable'

beryl reid, hylda baker, diana dors, pat phoenix

and although the actor isn't dead, i do mourn no more lily savage

i saw alan carr live before he hit the 'big time' and he was much funnier than i find him these days.

as a live (and unrecorded) act, his jokes, stories, wisecracks, come backs and put downs were fantastic

i think tv and dvd place constraints on the content of the performance.

that said, i am also a big fan of the older comics including (shock horror)bernard manning.

having again seen him live on a few occasions, he was genuinely funny.

i think he made a 'show' of himself with the deliberately bigoted attempts at humour, but his wise cracks, piss taking and heckler put downs were often far funnier than the jokes you already knew the punchline too

Every time I order two soups for lunch I have a secret giggle thinking of Julie Walters portrayal of the elderly waitress.

My family and friends teased me with that when I was waiting tables, used to come in and shout two soups at me.

" My family and friends teased me with that when I was waiting tables, used to come in and shout two soups at me. "

"ronnie barker was brilliant "

one of my favourite 'sketches' was from 'open all hours' when nurse gladys was in the shop :

ronnie barker : what can i do you for nurse gladys ?

lynda baron : a packet of polo mints

ronnie barker : cheap at half the price

such simple humour

She's actually very clever (as well as mad).

If you listen to her humour and how it is written, it deliberately makes reference to brands that we would recognise.

The comedy of association draws in a large amount of people because we understand instantly the points of reference.

so for example, she wouldn't refer to a biscuit as a biscuit, it would be 'a mcvities chocolate hobnob' so the term of reference draws us straight in

"following on from this (another excellent thread), does anyone think 'we' or the site users of the future will be waxing equally lyrically about todays celebrities / comedians??

seems to be in the age before stand up that a lot of the classic entertainers did the theatre of hard knocks in working mens clubs / rep etc and had more skills acroos the board (s)?

guys like alan carr dont even compare..

French and Saunders.

Wood and Walters.

Female comediennes have really given us some iconic performances and programmes.

Who could forget Mrs Overall from Acorn Antiques?"

Wood is a genius, and Walters very good also.

not saying there are not any as good as 'in the day' just done seem to be to the same level...probably just rose tinted reading glasses...
