Oh man, there's so many. Here are my favourites in no particular order and not because they glamourise war or anything like that:

Cross of Iron - stunning and harrowing

Full Metal Jacket - an awesome mix of humour and horror

Zulu - stunning, tear jerking in places

Black Hawk Down - a blunt representation of the horrors of war and the arrogance of the Americans

Heartbreak Ridge - more for the catch phrases

Saving Private Ryan - if for no other reason than the horrors of war portrayed in the the opening scenes

Fury - terrifying and inc_edibly power; made for uncomfortable viewing at times

I quite enjoyed that film. The days of the MRF were legendary, mainly for the wrong reasons. I did list 'a breed of heroes' about the guards doing a tour across the water. I also think 'contact' is on YouTube in its full version showing the paras doing a bandit country tour rather well.

The thin _ed line - has an amazing monologue, interesting characters, really shows the human side of soldiers. Absolutely beautiful film. The cinematography is some of the best I've seen in a war film. The dialogue/monologue is interesting and really gets you thinking. Watch this if you want a war film that really gets you thinking about war. I have too much to say about this film and don't wanna write an essay on here

We were soldiers - shows the horrors of the Vietnam war to a great scale.

Saving private Ryan - the characters, and the brutality of the omaha beach scene.

Beasts of no nation - a unique film portraying the use of child soldiers in Africa.

And a few others that would take a while to mention.

For sexual reasons, Blue Max, seeing Ursula Andress in the tin bath as a 6 year old certainly had a profound effect on me, for some reason ever since have always been partial to blondes......

Another one which has been on tv a couple of times is a Dutch film about double crossing in the dutch resistance during WWII is "The _ed book" or _ed diary,.....very good.

Adding another one I'd forgotten to the list: Operation Daybreak - great film about the mission to assassinate Heydrich in Prague

The dark of the sun

Set in the Congo in the 60's an unappreciated classic. Might be banned come to think about it.

Carrying on the mercenary theme;

Dogs of war (Christopher walked plays a merc who gets morals)

Komando leopard, the commander and code name wild geese. (Lewis Collins euro movies, harsher than you expect)

Catch 21

Saving private Ryan as have had some of the amputees help out in training and to see the difference when a new guy moves a body and a leg doesn't move with them and blood spurts everywhere makes training feel real !!

Do Star Wars films count?

Technically they're war films, though I assume that what the OP means are films set in Wartime on our own planet.

In which case, I don't have a favourite because I don't really like any of them much.

I'm surprised to see "thin _ed line" in this list! I thought it was awful loads of other great films mentioned though, but I'd personally like to add "letters from Iwo Jima" and one I've only just watched called "unbroken" to this mahoosive collection of top films.

Nah I did mention aliens as nam in space.

I guess ip man qualifies as the first is set during the Japanese invasion of China. That think with the army of Japan's budo guys wanting to fight king fu experts really did happen, they also tested sword and fist on prisoners on a daily basis.

Wellingborough

Kelly heros, battle of briton and where eagle dare was always my favourites

Although All of the above are awsome

And if i may

U571was fairly good

But i might be wrong only one person has mentioned

We were soldiers

That went straight to the top of the list for me

Actually mention of U571 (which to be honest totally undermined the historical accuracy of capturing the Enigma code) has reminded me of another...Enigma..sure not an action war film but a great film set in wartime all the same.

I mentioned it in my first post as my favourite and so did the post either above or below me. It's brilliant. It's a shame that MOST modern ww2 films are shown from an American perspective.

Probably the oldest film mentioned on here. Not very graphic certainly no bad language (we are British after all thank you) it's even in black & white filmed way back in 1956, but what a superb film. It's called 'Reach for the sky' starring Kenneth More. It's about a spitfire ace called Douglas Bader. A guy so fantastically British he lost both his legs in a plane crash yet still managed to fly in combat. Was shot down, escaped twice, gerry took his legs the buggers!!

Lost count how many times I watched it as a nipper in the 70's and still think it's the best now.

My own child about 4 years ago at 7 sat and watched it from beginning to end and never moved once.

I defy anyone to watch it and not like it. Well if you don't like it you are clearly a treacherous dog and deserve the gibit!!!

"OK not strictly a war film as the OP meant it but throwing it out there anyway:

Starship Troopers

It was a film about war, technically aliens is a Vietnam movie in space "

if starship troopers is being aloud then i am then i am having " the Empire strikes back!!!"......

not many war films where the bad guys win!!!
