Cheque Mate?

I sit here doing my office stuff and Im surprised at the amount of payments arriving in the post, being made by cheque these days. They're usually bank transfer or debit cards.

Could this be an indication that people are trying to buy more time in this very difficult recession by using slower payment methods?

Have you revived cheques and cancelled direct debits etc for fear of lack of funds and having charges applied?

What are you doing to save pennies?

I have swapped to cheques for most things... but because I have more control...

My bank doesnt charge fees for refused DD's though.

I know what you mean about the control thing. They charge you for staples on a business bank account though - and kindly send you a mail about this quarters charges well in advance incase theres a chance they don't get paid I reckon! Must be nice to be able to dip into someones account at will - filthy bankers!!

I do a lot of online banking these days and try and keep an eye on what comes in and out. I do like DDs though because you can't forget them.

Aye D people are feeling the pinch and its only going to get worse

I havent had any real buissness to shout about for over 12 months now

People just dont have the money any more xx

im trying on insisting on cash payments now, having done jobs, and paid for the expenses incurred, ive been on the receiving end(or not!) of several rubber cheques, one lot gave me 3 bouncy ones in a row.Its not fair when youve done the work and have to wait sometimes up to 3 months for the payment, theatres ate the worst for this! x

I know what you mean emms. I did some work for someone who is a regular customer and they said their bacs system was down and asked if they could send a cheque - I find bacs a very old fashioned system - and the chrques STILL isn't in the post! It's a long time since I smiled wryly at being so gullible!

Im still doing work for them this week - at what point do you withold this though and risk upsetting a good customer?

You love your work too and sometimes the payment is secondary - but we gotta eat!

Good question and i'm sure one that anybody who is in business has asked themselves and I reckon we've all come up with different answers.

BUT

Are they still a good customer if they are not paying you?????

Not if it becomes a repeat pattern. This is the first time its happened - bacs can fail so I'll suck it and see

However I found this rather interesting. My bank offers me a free service as a business banker membership to credit focus. If you put the name of a company you intend trading with it gives the state of their business and their current credit score, working capital, assets etc. It works in conjunction with experian. You can't look up personal credit information - just company.

Well to save the pennies i am drinking a little less, driving a little slower and being a little less indulgent while shopping. I wouldn't say i am saving but i am spending what i did 18 months ago and prices have risen in the mean time so its kind of an economy drive.

Im changing similarly. I withdraw money I want to spend on food and entertainment. I think when hard cash is in front of you you tend to be more prudent than with a debit card. The thing is with watching pennies you realise how much unnecessary crap you buy.

I've started to do the same with shopping. It make you think when you are handing cash over and far less chocolate biscuits are being bought.

as most account transfers are now made at the time of presentation of the cheque by the recipient (rather then +3 days under BACS) have given up sending cheques for bills as the cost of the stamp is far higher than any interest accrued inbetween - plus the extra time it would take to 'clear' has gone

like many now do most transactions on-line but on occasions (e.g. refunds) one still gets payments back by cheque which means a trek down to a bank (usually involving paying the local car park company some of your money)

My local Post Office has huge signs up about how from 1st July you can't pay for certain things using a cheque. In fact the list is so long, you want to say to them just list the ones that you can still pay using a cheque.

I know over here that from the 30th June 2011, banks are no longer honoring cheques if funds are not avalable in the account, even with a cheque guarantee card.

My bank have written to me to save chq guarantee is no longer valid.

We save all our change and £2 coins, it soon adds up. Paid for one holiday this year.

I agree about cash, not sure I spend any less but know when the money is gone, it's gone. I never know with debit card payments.

Cut up my credit card years ago too and it's the best thing I ever did. If I really want something I save for it now and even have savings which I never had before

with reticent payers it is often a good idea to get part payments. either 50 up front 50 at the end of 50 in the midde and 50 at the end. Some may not like it though, but if they really want your services they will comply.
