"Hey ladies, Just curious about your experiences.... I barely have any issues as such when I am menstruating other than a bad stomach sometimes, but approximately a week or so before I feel crap.... My energy levels fall through the floor - I'm generally exhausted, I lose my appetite, feel bloated and uncomfortable and my breasts get so painful that even touching them hurts. I get sooooooooo tearful, grumpy, miserable as hell and irritable that I could either sob my heart out or blòody murder someone!!! I have had PMT before, but it seems to be getting worse. I am only 43, but could it be getting worse as I get nearer the menopause??? I take evening primrose and try to do everything I can to prevent these symptoms, but they get me down sometimes. The exhaustion and moods are the worst by far." I can relate. You could be starting your perimenopausal stage. Sometimes anti depressants are prescribed for the mood swings. I guess you could try St John's wort. Just check with GP to ensure it's not anaemia or thyroid dysfunction.

"Get a Mirena Coit fitted - 5 years no periods, no PMT and no more symptoms to get you through the Menopause years. Doesn't suit some folks - but worth a try. I've had 3 and only side effect - increased libido - which isn't always useful lol " This is a lucky lady although I wouldn't say it's the mirena that's stopping peri and menopause symptoms as symptoms are caused by declining levels of oestrogen not progesterone (mirena doesn't contain oestrogen).

Plus, it's only a hunch that I'm hitting menopause, not had any tests to confirm that I am menopausal as yet. Think I'll visit the docs though. Thank you for advice - it's appreciated

"How long since you last had a full set of bloods doing at your Drs? Might be worth an ask to see if theres anything else underlying throwing off these symptoms." I think I had a full blood count, thyroid function, liver function, and glucose tolerance test as well as a clear cervical smear approx 6-10 months ago or thereabouts

I've recently found out I'm anaemic so I'm hoping when my iron levels are back to normal I may see an improvement. I don't like taking tablets at the best of time so very loathe to start taking the pill or other contraceptives besides I don't think it's healthy to stop your periods for prolonged times. I don't know what the answer is but I know I couldn't put up with another 15 years of this. Hope you find your answer soon Ginger

Is the contraceptive pill a consideration for you? If so it maybe a sensible option if it eases your symptoms. Unfortunately there is no easy answer for some of us ladies sometimes... We have to do periods, babies and as if all that wasn't enough - the final hurdle - menopause. Isn't mother nature delightful

Probably have it now until I'm in my 50's. Sex drive is good though and no periods. There is a Facebook page you should check out.

" I had horrendous periods before I got the coil- I would be on and bleeding heavily for 3-4 weeks, then maybe a week off (if I was lucky, usually less) then back on again. Got the Mirena fitted Oct 2013 and haven't looked back since- haven't noticed any weight gain (but then I was 'fabulous' anyway) mood swings aren't a problem, acne and rosacea are a little worse bit treatable. All I get now is a watery bleed a few times a year which lasts a day or two, I get my coil checked at the GUM clinic when I have my monthly STI check, to make sure it is in place etc, and I feel much more 'balanced' now I have it. No horrible periods, cramps etc. It does hurt going in if you haven't had babies naturally (vaginally) but if you have then it'll be much easier as your cervix will be softer.

"Get yourself off to the doctors I was always tired and found out I was anemic. If you are you will get some ferrous sulfate. Take care." That is exactly what she prescribed for me. Just one pill a day and I feel normal again. And I am older than the OP - Mrs. J -

Your last paragraph is inaccurate. Have the coil fitted as you have your last days of your period.

Turns out I'm anaemic, high cholesterol and vitamin d deficiency. I've been prescribed iron, vitamin d and antidepressants. I'm just waiting for it all to start kicking in.
