The sounds of a place

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

I've been working here in Paris for a couple days and it's striking how different it sounds to London.

I've heard fewer sirens, of any kind, but a lot more engines being revved. There's also a lot more French spoken here.

What do you notice when you go somewhere else?

Normally a different kind of noise, often subtle. Different smells too.

I never really noticed the sounds of New York City until I moved away. Now when I go home I notice the sirens, the people talking outside all the time, the sounds of people walking quickly. When I used to go upstate in the summers I would notice the sounds of the bugs at night - the moths with their wings flapping, the crickets, the lightning bugs buzzing.

In York there isn't anything distinctive, I don't think. I guess the sounds of people's back gates opening and closing and children yelling.

Manhattan made London seem quiet to me.

I only recently found out the Niel Diamonds song. What a beautiful noise was written about the sounds of New York. New York is my favourite city in the world and I could stand in the middle of time square for hours just listening to the noise x

Whenever I visit London I think of it as quiet. I think Paris was noisier, personally.

I read a book once that talked about the distinct sounds of the street cleaners in Paris, and I do remember them fairly distinctly from my trip there.

There really isn't many distinctive noises where I live. Aside from the seagulls and the sea

Yes! I experienced that sitting outside eating dinner this evening.

It does, and although I'm a writer I can't really put it into words.

My sister found the Canadian friendliness a little disconcerting. I'd been over several times before and couldn't see what she was talking about.

I'd really love to drive across Canada.

When we went to Tunisia there was a background noise, like a low buzz, and right outside our window was a small zoo, so we had the animal noises too. It was very peaceful.

I noticed Liverpool by the river was very quiet, compared to London.

I haven't noticed pizza smells in Paris, but Marks and Spencer smells the same.

That's interesting you found it peaceful - animal noises from a small zoo would disturb me greatly and not because of fear.

I think it was amazing, happy people walking around everywhere, not to mention how clean the streets were!

And I definitely recommend it, it was awesome!

I really noticed the sound of bicycles in Amsterdam.

The sounds of the Vegas strip at different times of the day, from dawn through to evening, really change, with the mood I guess.

New Orleans seems to have a completely different sound to go with it's completely different vibe.

The sounds of the markets in Al Jubayl were so distinct, overpowering but fascinating.

And then the sounds of my street are often dictated by how many kids are playing outside.

I'll stop now.

It was a very small zoo and we were about 8 floors up I think.

Central

I usually notice the sounds of different native or predominant birds in places that I visit, as well as how people use their vehicles differently. In the USA I'm usually bugged by people who have cars with audible beeping when they lock the depot - typically rental cars. Especially annoying when you're asleep and the night is quiet. Never heard in the UK.

I hear the sounds of plants, as they move, stirred by wind or I brush by.

Always so much to hear, often from afa

Have a great time in Paris Lickety

First time I went to Bangalore, the constant traffic noise as they sound horns all the time,to let other vehicles know they are there, and most vehicles have reversing horns, which around xmas is odd as some play xmas songs. As for smells, ranged from tropical flowers to open sewers, and frogs that don't go Ribbit!

The usual 'beep beep beep' reversing noise is replaced by Christmas music?

Stoke, the night time silences are broken by the sounds of gunfire and sirens. Or the local chavs with their little cars, with silly exhausts on them, racing along the A50.
