Quantity or Quality of life!?

What's more important?

Would you take having only one year of your life left but being able to live life to the full - money no object, you could do all you desired but die in exactly 365 days time.

Or live for another 30 or 40 years and live on the breadline with every day a struggle (but in reasonable health!?)

Me? I'd take the latter I'd think - life is precious and I wouldn't want to wish any of it away whilst I had my health!

agreed and quality of life is what you make it (and you don't need money to live life to the full!)

But this was more a question of black and white preferences - a year of a absolute hedonism or 30 years of a dull, average, uninspiring life?

I`d rather "live" for a while, rather than "stay alive" for a while longer but comparing one year with 30 or 40 is difficult - because in the 30 or 40 years of merely existing, I may win the lottery etc. and therefore be able to revert to plan A - hope that makes sense?

Its a little off topic I guess, but as someone who doesn't have (and won't ever have) children, I do sometimes wonder will anyone remember me when I'm gone? Will I just be some vaguely recalled older relative when my siblings' kids all grow up and are showing family photos to their own kids? Have I made a significant enough contribution in this life to be memorable or will I fade into obscurity? So I suppose for me, the year of hedonism might seem attractive... Go out with a bang

Interesting question, but I think most people would want more than a year.

The replies from the other respondents are also true.. Learning to appreciate and get pleasure from the simple things will give you far more of an aggregate benefit over the rest of a lifetime.

In general our failure to live life to the full I think is more likely to come as a result of a lack of motivation/organisation rather than lack of facility or resources..

To the inevitable 'lottery winners', yes, the first thing I'd do is employ a PA to actually make these thing happen for me.

If family circumstances are part of the consideration it would have to be the latter, would like to see little un grow up, but purely theoretically the former is appealing.

This question always makes me think of Achilles in The Iliad:

"Two fates bear me on to the day of death.

True, but the life that's left me will be long,

The stroke of death will not come on me quickly."

I know it's not exactly applicable because you're not talking about glory, but it still comes to mind.

Personally, I think a short life lived to the fullest is better than a long life with nothing notable to say about it. Although the latter is very much what I expect my life to be

I'd take the first option and make the most of it. Id make sure my friends and family had everything they needed and get to spend some quakuty time with me we would take time to appreciate.

I didn't take offence. (Read my profile, I quote life is short). I struggle with the fact I won't ever get to do most things I really want op. Experiences will elude me It's fact, but I want to do everything I can whilst I'm alive. I couldn't choose either one. Because the first choice brings me closer to death sooner. And I'm scared shitless of dying.

it's a toughie isn't is as I guess the majority of us won't be able to experience all that we want to. I've been lucky enough to do some great things and visit some fantastic places but realistically won't get the chance to do lots of things I'd like to. Work and real life get in the way!

And yeah, likewise I don't think I've accepted my mortality yet. I don't even want to start contemplating that yet.

having lived in poverty most of my life, and now having a varied amount of knowledge on said subject, i know the latter is not really possible.

but i was happy enough being poor, was a bit stressful when bills arrived but not too bad. living in a country that keeps it's poor barely alive is better than living in one that lets them die.

erm, think i'll take the one year of experiencing everything i ever wanted and then die.
