Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

BBC4 now, The Immortalist. A Russian millionaire determined to make us all immortal.

Would you want to be immortal?

My life feels too long already so I really can't imagine wanting it to go on endlessly.

Imagine if we all did become immortal. Imagine how quickly the world would overpopulate if nobody died.

Imagine all the resources running out, but we couldn't die!

Imagine the HELL on Earth that would be!!

But is that constantly aging or staying the same age forever? In 1,000 years being some shrivelled old husk with barely any strength to move but just existing wouldn't be much fun.

If I could sit in a library and read all the books then maybe.

Otherwise, no, I wouldn't want to be immortal, I mean I'm impressed I made it to 30.

Long life is all good if you have your health and a bit of money!

Being poor and broken isn't appealing at all

As soon as I cant take care of myself - then it's time to go!

Hmmm, I get that.

If I got to the stage where my quality of life was so shit that I was merely existing then I don't think I'd want to be here, regardless of my age.

I think we're living too long as it is! Living well, for longer, is fine but living a decrepit, senile life is just taking up space for the sake of it.

If we could stay at a certain age then maybe but we have a friend that would have everyone retired at 50 and asleep at 65.

He says at least you know what to expect and are less.likely to suffer I'll health and have 15 yrs of fun before going.

I only want my life to continue longer than it naturally would if I could remain as fit as I am now. Being very elderly is no picnic if you're not in good health.

Quite a lot of this is about merging human brains with technology. The living forever is keeping your brain.

That does provide the option of having a new robotic body for every occasion, I suppose.

Would that include technology to fix pre existing brain conditions, like dementia?

They're not doing that so far in the programme.

Ah.

But of course, if we got so much into the future where it would be possible to put a human brain into a robot, the odds are there might be a cure for dementia or ways to slow it down.

I'm just toddling off on my own train of thought now.

They are now saying that it could solve problems like Alzheimer's. They have to work out how to upload the right parts of the mind.

If I could remain fairly youthful then yeah I don't see why not. Being dead sounds rubbish but living forever in a decrepid state of uselessness sounds even worse.
