Can you stop?

Lets not even go as far down the road as addiction to alcohol and drugs for a second. Lets talk about the compelling pull of anything you can become addicted to and why it has such a hold on you.

Its all very well people getting on high horses and saying its choice to do things that are considered bad for your health. Whats your addiction? None you say? Mines as innocent as takeaway food, crisps and fizzy pop with the odd chocolate bar thrown in. Mine's also late night tv that makes me jaded for work its the internet that makes me miss meals as Im so absorbed in it sometimes... all not good for my health - can I stop when I'm surrounded by it in my life? I very much doubt it because there's a part of me that says its just lifestyle choices.

So no matter what your addiction it takes willpower to overcome it. Summon up some willpower to try and stop and see how long you go before you crack. Walk in others shoes before saying how easy it is to stop any addiction. The fact is your personal addiction affects the same pleasure centres in the brain - no matter what the substance or thrill is. Man craves pleasure sensations and the brain has the tools to argue with its own logic in the form of releasing chemicals that cause addiction. Its certainly food for thought and can illustrate that the bottom line is we are an individual and on the whole are pretty self serving when it comes to pleasurable feelings.

I get crazes which are similar to addiction but eventually I get bored and move to something else.

Managed to conquer my addiction to chocolate and would like to give up smoking, have tried about 5 times, once lasting for two years but due to associating with other smokers began again. Roll my own so don't smoke that much but you are right, I don't like the idea of being addicted to something that is so difficult to stop.

Ice ......Every time, without exception,If my iron levels are normal the ice craving stop. I cant even imagine why anyone would crave ice. But when I am anemic like now ice is my number one prority every day. It is amazing how much it influences my life I become like a drug addict. Chopping away on a cup of ice. But common with people who have this anemia .. thankgod i found out on the net i was thinking i was going mad eating ice . x

I like to think i have full control over most things. I don't think i would ever become dependent on anything.

See this is my point - we decide consciously that we dont have an addiction yet the pleasure chemicals in our brain rewarded us so we seek more of the same stimulus so addiction fetish or all similar descriptions - it does seem to beyond our control!!

I had ice cravings while I was pregnant, all makes sense now!! But I do understand the struggle to give up an addiction, be it smoking (yay just quit, good for me!) or fabswingers...how often do you have to do something before it becomes an addiction? I browse the site more often than I have a meet, am I addicted to swinging or the site? I don't judge any addiction, and whatever the help you get, if your own input is not genuine, you will never manage to kick whatever habit you have. Good luck to everyone trying!! xxxxx

It wasn't an addiction but a few years ago I was bang into kite buggying. I'd be up at Castle Hill as much as I could, on light nights in the summer till 11 some nights. Away to the coast as often as I could. I was constantly looking out the window to see if the trees were moving. I was loving being out in the fresh air all the time and it kept me really fit. But it was all brought to an abrupt end when some bastard set fire to my car with all my gear in the boot

Addiction represents an intemperate relationship with an activity that has adverse biological, social, or psychological consequences for the person engaging in these behaviors.

This is a very interesting post to me because yes you were getting pleasure from something but when it came to an abrupt halt you didn't buy new gear to take it up again. So obviously you have a great deal of self control. Did you move onto another pastime?

On a lighter note - I wonder who was so fed up of your 'addiction' they set fire to your car to stop it!

Try a read of the American Society of Addiction Medicine's definition - they're not nearly as succinct!!

Mine is shopping for clothes, shoes and accessories. Every week I go shopping and I have to buy something for myself. I don't need any new clothes and certainly no lingerie but I just love buying it, gives me a real thrill.

I'm not addicted, if I didn't have any money I wouldn't steal to do it but I'd be feeling a little miserable stuck at home. If I'm doing something different in the daytime, ie theme park or something like that, then I don't think of it. I would never window shop, I have to have the money to be able to buy, just looking stresses me far more than not going out shopping

that's more like a hobby than an addiction, the same thing happens to me if I run out of oils or canvas and am too broke or don't have time to replenish, it makes me miserable.

Thats how I got into my current artwork style - ran out of paint - so built up relief with polyfilla! See the addiction/compelling feature can go sideways too to satisfy the cravings.

Window shopping is not for me either Feebs xxxx
