Is this actually common place?

The 18 year old hasn't even heard of any of his film adaptations, even though he's not a big reader - but the Carrie remake only came out in 2013, and IT & The Dark Tower are released this year. And by 18, I'd already read most of his most iconic novels and watched a couple of adaptations.

Yeah. I guess so. Lots of cultural references and big names in literature bypass people.

I'm always surprised when people haven't heard of Pygmalion and only know 'My Fair Lady'.

Not to belittle the recent tragic events but before last week I'd never heard of Ariana Grande and I doubt many people of my generation had...

I love swings... Roundabouts not so much, once got stuck on one for four laps as it was busy and everyone was bullying me into the inside lane

In all honesty, I had heard of her but my knowledge of her talent stopped and started with Hairspray Live.

Yes it's common, younger people are interested in and learn about other things. People are becoming more narrow and limited in what they know. I wonder how many actually read from paper

I was in a bakery and overhear a couple of 20 ish year olds discussing steak and ale pies. They didn't know what ale was and couldn't believe you cook with it!

I think it isn't. It depends how and who you were raised by.

I am 20 and I have a great passion for history and literature so I know of many great names in literature that may be classed as "old"

I don't do football.

No but they're extremely popular athletes in the mountain biking/trials community.

But I wouldn't expect you to know about a topic that doesn't interest you

Recently, I was lucky enough to have a short-term sensual relationship with a19yr old girl when I was working in Lincs.

She was a massive fan of The Who and David Bowie - so not all 'youngsters' are unaware of their cultural roots, no.

And yes, we had some incredible nights together, wining, dining, chatting and... yes, amazing!

Yes, Gee Atherton is 2x UCI DH world champion and his Sister Rachel is also at the top of her game being women's champion multiple times too.

That surprises me. I don't like roundabouts as once it gets to the fourth lap I want to be sick, in fact I was sick on one once, happily for you it wasn't on the one you were on as you might have took the full brunt of it as you were on the inside

It doesn't surprise me, I do wonder how well read our younger generations are when it cones to fiction. When I was 18 I read lots of fiction (but not Stephen King) but I didn't have the Internet to distract me. Now I still read lots but read less books and more online articles and blogs.

And of course, what is read often depends on popularity and coolness, Stephen King had thst when I was 18 but no idea now

To be honest I have no idea who you are on about and I am 40 years on from the 18 year old.

I have also only ever read one SK book ( the name even escapes me but that could be my age ) and it isn't something that made me want to read any more.

This is sort of the point I was making though, we won't all think one thing is iconic and something we should all know about.

Pop culture is an age thing Stephen king is obviously going out of fashion as quickly as browsing a book store. Just as much jk Rowling might for kids of today. Their children might not recognise her name in the future.
