Seen as it closed soon after my question... Though I'd start a 3rd one.

My feet keep going numb when I ride. Suggestions so far have been to get a bike fit done and check my laces both of which I will look into... Any other ideas?

Normal pedals and normal trainers (cheap ones from a shop)

First, make sure your saddle is set right. That means both the height and fore and aft on the rails.

Your feet will swell during exercise so don't tie the laces too tight.

Also, look at where you are placing your feet on the pedals, try pedalling with the balls of your feet rather than the arch.

Bike fitting my play a big part to it. Also padded pants might help. If i dont wear padded pants my balls get pins and neddles in them.

Have you tried cleat pedals and shoes? Completely changed the way I cycle and you can use the shoes if you do any indoor cycling too

You're compressing a nerve somewhere, and it'll likely be underpinned either by saddle position or what part of it most of your weight is on. If you can afford it, a bike fitting should really help

Have a look on e bay for a second hand cheep cycle shoes 1 size above your shoe size. The ridgid molded sole shouls eleviate the movement of your sole.

Have a look at u-tube for some bike self size tips so ur near enough to a shop bike fit. Try u tube global cycling network. Its a brit site and all are ex pros.

If you are not ready for cleats, maybe try a different pair of shoes with a stiffer sole, or better still maybe upgrade to cycling shoes and try toe clips instead of cleats, to be honest using cleats is scary at first but you soon get used to it and then you won't want to be without!

You can buy ladies specific saddles.

If you can find a Specialised dealership nearby, they offer a fitting service & sale or return.

Everyone is a different shape so recommending a saddle is difficult!

Cleats make such a difference to how you pedal and sit on the bike.

Yes, you need to get used to them, and practice unclipping, but it soon becomes second nature.

They also take some of the pressure off your feet when pedalling, because if you want to go faster you pull up harder, rather than stomping on the pedals.

As regards your problem, I'd look at the nose of your saddle, and whether it's pressing on your groin / thigh.

But there are a lot of nerves running through that area (no, not those) leading down to the lower body.

Have you spoken to reputable bike dealer ?

It maybe the seat you have is not right for you..do you know if it's a ladies fit seat?

What type of clothing are you wearing... I have to wear both padded shorts and padded underwear.

Hope one of these may help.

I would agree with this.

Plus a bike fit. Try different saddles. and look at where you are putting your foot. One advantage of cleats is you use the ball of your foot more. Helps a lot if you have everything sized correctly.

Lots of variables.... Cleats will help but like saddle height and fore//aft saddle for good reach and a 15 degree arm bend ...cleat position help's too...to get used to clipping in and out ..use a spinning bike or a turbo trainer... Go for spd M cleats as they disconnect easier before going Sal's, Keo,Speedplays.... Saddle... If you have issues.... Sit bone width is a key and for ladies it depends on whether you are an innie or outie if you get flap mash...if so there are nose down cut out saddles out there..... Start with the saddle height...get that wrong and it's all wrong

Stiffer soled shoes may well help. I had some soreness and numbness in my foot, then realised that a)the laces were a lot tighter across that part of my foot on the one that was going numb, and b) the soles of the trainers were quite thin.

I got a thicker soled pair of trainers which I then used for a while & paid more attention to how I'd laced them & no more numb toes!

(I then had issues of trainers slipping off the pedals when riding in the wet, so changed over to SPD's. Was terrified at first, but set them at minimum tension to be able to release easily, & even though I did come off a couple of times, no harm done & now wouldn't be without them)

Just East of Wakefield

Was out earlier, a somewhat 'moist' morning!!!

It was decent enough, however, to take gloves off after 20 minutes, & keep them in the pocket for the following (almost) 3 hours

Undecided whether to go to running club tonight now, have l had enough exercise for one day?

Hoping for decent weather tomorrow, for another ride

"I have SPD's and SPD-SL's on all my bikes, suspect I'd struggle to ride on flat pedals now!"

Petite Sara;

I've used SPD (MTB style) since about 1991, when they were big clunky things

We've ALL fallen over, with our first couple of clipless rides

Teo of my Ribbles (the commuter/'all-rounders'/training) have MTB spd pedals, as does my cyclo-cross bike (even though l've not raced CX for a few years

The 'best bike' (another Ribble) has LOOK 'Keo' pedals

Confidence, & a slight degree of fatalism, helps your first few rides

Cleat set-up is VERY important, or your knees won't thank you for it

It's all connected

Ankle/knee twist (cleats), to the saddle height & set-back

Forget having both feet flat on the ground, if you can do that, your saddle is way too low (by maybe 3-4 inch)

After what you said I'd be inclined to think seat position, when you foot is pushed right down you should still have a little bend in the knee.

Also I'd suggest every couple of miles stand up from the saddle for a minute just to get blood circulation going.

Reasonable pace

Saw a few put from various Clubs that l know

Felt a bit thirsty, so called at Birkin cafe for a pot of tea (& a water bottle refill)

Very busy!!, maybe 50+ cyclists

Then back on the lanes

Home about 10 minutes ago, before it gets far too warm

Pots of tea, & Tour de France, this afternoon, l think?

I used to suffer with this

Ball of your foot over the axle of the pedal. And it may sound silly but your feet need to stay dry and not get cold

Have tried Di2, but won't be having it on bikes for a long time

Granted, my work bike does have hydraulic discs, but that's a safety issue

In the dry, l don't think there's much difference to its predecessor (which had Tiagra side-pulls, that were 'kept up to' & '23' section tyres)

The new one (bought in March) has '28', so any dry difference is due to rubber on road

In the wet though, it's a different matter, & the ease of action too far outweighs cables (less 'pull' required)

"Granted, my work bike does have hydraulic discs, but that's a safety issue

"

I know l called it my work-bike

However, it's more than that

It does all my other riding, barring dry weather (& dry roads!)

The mudguards stay on it, l'll put a rack on it & use panniers if need be

Only issues with it, are

It's fairly hefty, a heavy frame/fork combination, even before build-up

Due to the gusseting at the head-tube/top-tube junction, a frame fit pump can't be carried

Not had to revert to bottom 3 sprockets yet, then again, l've not had it down to HolmeMoss or over The Strines yet

A couple of trips into Jackson Bridge (Oil Can Cafe) have seen me climb out of New Mills (sat down) in middle of cassette (34 x 19 )

Sorry for boring a few

What did everyone do before GPS & Strava, etc??

4 hours on Sunday, with a few long steady drags in first 2 hours

A few sharper climbs in second two

Regretted using 'work bike', missed the good full carbon on the hills

Still, all miles & hard work

Monday;

Out through Garforth, into Aberford, over to Lotherton Hall

Through Towton, Ulleskelf, Church Fenton, Sherburn-in-Elmet

Pot of tea at Squire

Back via; South Milford, Brotherton, FerryBridge, Knottingley & Pontefract

Today;

Just a couple of hours, around south-west of Wakefield

Newmillerdam, Woolley, Bretton, etc

Running club earlier

Not sure where to ride to, tomorrow?

You have about 1 in 4 chance of getting a place as it's a ballot for places... Unless you sign up for a charity place.

Ride London is not a hard ride to do but has an amazing atmosphere.

Wales in a Day is more challenging. Caernarfon to Chepstow 185 miles in a single day.

Now that was a some hard riding done that day...

Try mountain bike shoes, they have a strengthened sole.

Look at seat height and position, there could be a nrve being trapped by the saddle.

Just under 10 miles at lunch today. Left my bike at work so will need to cycle home tomorrow which is another 10 miles then doing a 16 mile ride on Sunday with a friend.

Dix my first organised cycle event today. A (very) leisurely 16 mile bike ride through some beautiful cotswold countryside.

Managed the whole way without incident then fell off going back into the event village

Got some good free stuff off the safer roads partnership and had a really interesting chat with a traffic cop who is working on educating cyclists and drivers on how to share the road

Well rode Leanne

Was the fall, due to the surface, or a first time in clipless pedals?

If pedal related, we've all done it

I'll admit to it, even though it was many years ago (l bought my first back in about 1990)

Keep up the good work!!!

As for my rides?

Worked Saturday & Sunday, so it was only a circuitous route back home, no long ride

My feet keep going numb when I ride. Suggestions so far have been to get a bike fit done and check my laces both of which I will look into... Any other ideas? "

Simple answer is your saddle height is wrong. Pedals and shoes won't make a difference if you have the wrong saddle height. Bike fits are good but can cost and plenty of you tube videos showing how to get it right...

"What shoes/pedals are you using?

Normal pedals and normal trainers (cheap ones from a shop)

I'm not ready for cleats yet lol"

There is your issue, trainer soles are too soft when cycling.

Look at cycling trainers, they have a reinforced sole. Some don't have cleats on, so look around.

It may have already been said but consider using Mountain Bike pedals and shoes. There isn't much difference between those and road bike cleats for most amateur cyclists.

You can set the pedals to unclip easily, and you can walk normally in them as they have a flat surface...the clip is inset to the shoe.

I use these are regularly cycle 40/50 miles comfortably in them.

Ditto

I use them SPDs, & Sidi MTB/CX shoes on my commuter/all-rounder (& have done for a LOT of years)

As stated, they can be walked in. & you have twice the opportunity to clip in

Used to race MTB & CX, so used to unclipping at speed, jumping off & back on

Sadly, you may fall off more than once

Practice at first on a soft surface - playing fields, so you have a soft landing

You will fall off several times, if possible, get a friend to help

Once you think you have mastered technique

Have him/her step out in fromt of you at varying distances/speeds (still on grass) for practice at unclipping in emergency

When you're confident, & having made a couple of safe trips on the road, that's when you will fall

As instinct takes over from learnt behaviour

I'll admit l did it, as l used 'LOOK' system first (the triangular roadie), & still had toe-clips on my MTB (Christophe steel, not plastic)

Then went to SPDs on MTB/CX & commuter

I got very used to them..... went out on road bike on a nice day & fell off at lights, as l'd subconciously underestimated the different spring settings (how tight the release mechanism is)

Live & learn

Bike wasn't scratched!

"Lots of variables.... Start with the saddle height...get that wrong and it's all wrong"

This. I had a bike fit done with a Specialized dealer when I bought my new rd bike and also went over to cleats.

It cost about £150

When you say ex pro cyclist .......

It's normal for SPECIALIZED dealers to charge for bike fits. It's their policy, though if you'd bought a bike, good business would've said the bike fit should be free.

Cheap trainers could be the problem. You need shoes with stiff soles to spread the load of the pedal over a wider area of your foot. Look at proper cycling shoes and see how stiff the soles are.

+1 for SPD pedals. The best upgrade you can ever do to a bike.

I took up cycling June this year. Easiest way to

Make a quick improvement and help comfort for feet is proper cleats. Yes you’ll probably fall off as I did but they make such a difference. Some 12 weeks later I cycled the Birmingham velo for charity, and the feet were ok!

I may be there - just looking at pics of competitors recce'ing the course in the wind today.

It's a fab hill with a great pub at the top - anyone who fancies seeing some live cycling should try it. I'm torn between spectating and getting some base miles in - may try and do both so I get there to see the second half of the field....

How was it? I keep meaning to go down to Windhill. Only live 20 mins from cannock but don't go too often. "

Went again today. Its great..... apart from the push up!

I think so. Couldn't see why it wouldn't be.

Has anyone taken their bike (or their girl / boy friend for that matter) "Up The Buttress"?

Now THAT'S what you call a stiff one (climb).

No, but have been over The Strines innumerable times (in both directions)

And 'Shibden Wall' (Lee Lane, Halifax)

Have run up Trooper Lane (Halifax, again)

Plus, up toWainstalls, from Luddenden Foot

Horrible hill!!!!

Looks like it might be a fairly chilly ride out later this morning!

Still, it might have warmed up a bit by the time l go, but have to watch for icy patches on the back lanes

"Anyone in this thread Tri??"

A few friends of mine do

At rather high level too

I sometimes ride with one of them, & it's damned hard work

Stiffer sole cycling specific shoes coupled with getting your saddle the right height. Watch you tube videos on the sort of cycling you do. Road cycling height is much higher than MTB height (before droppers btw before someone corrects me).

Trainers are no good for riding as no where near stiff enough and your foot will lose alot of energy through it.

If you are doing road, gravel CX i'd stick some cheap clipless shoes and cheap shimano cleats on. Can even use them for spin classes too then.

Has anyone else noticed how up themselves roadies seem to be these days? I think it's a recent thing but it seems much worse. I heard at the weekend of a roadie blanking an mtb rider who offered him help, twice, an hour and a half apart. Rather walk home than talk to someone who isnt dressed up like a homoerotic fetish! Wtf is wrong with these people?!

That's, weird/rude. I only road cycle and I say hello to everyone. If I see someone stopped at the side of the road I'll always ask if they need any help no matter what their riding..

I presume you're discussing the Ronde van Calderdale/'Hell of the Worth'?

One guy rode it, not sure if this year, or 2016 on a Trike!!!

I think it seems to be the newbies, who have come into it late

Older, established/long-timers, who have (maybe) come up through the Clubs will wave/say "Hello"/stop to offer help

Around here anyway

I've had roadies totally ignore me, & MTBers too

Another phenomenon, presumably the latecomers is shorts/short-sleeves/dark glasses whatever the weather!!

What's that about?

I wear bib-tights for my commute, whatever the time (or month), be it at 04:30, or 23:30

Likewise, yellow (or clear) lenses in my Mumbos '365' for most purposes

Right.... Even though I haven't been out for weeks I have decided to ask mummy santa for some cleats and shoes etc but it's all so confusing!

A lot if people are suggesting SPD's as the cleats are recessed so easier to walk on (up hills )

Any tips from the fab cycle world?

"What shoes/pedals are you using?

Normal pedals and normal trainers (cheap ones from a shop)

I'm not ready for cleats yet lol"

The problem with trainers is they are floppy, try cycling shoes without the cleats and just use normal pedals, if you for mountain bike style shoes they look like trainers but are a lot stiffer, that will solve it x

Yes definitely. SPDs and mountain bike shoes would be a much better setup than a road set up

Why don't they all come as a package that I can give the details to mummy santa?! She's very easily confused you know

Deffo spd's,decathlon have them bout £20,or flat one side,SPD other, shoes I've shimano, specialised, but usually end up wearing three year old aldi, leave pedal tension, adjusted with Allen key low, just flick heel out to unclip, easier on knees too! Was prowling internet before shift this morning, job went wrong so early finish popped into bike shop way home, big reduction on giant anthem full suspension, got extra£100 off in shop so full fleet of giants now, tcr, tcx, and anthem lol

Should I give cycling a proper whirl? I row a lot and only really use my push iron for nipping to the shop. Loads of people seem to be into it nowadays. What's the appeal?

Defo. Nothing better than getting a half decent road bike and eating up some miles in the summer. Can't say I'm a big winter cyclist tho, hate all the extra clothing required!
