Music that maketh the movie

Having just fallen back into the wonderful world of Twin Peaks, I've been thinking about how the music enhances the experience of the programme massively -- as is often much more the typical case in the movies.

Do you have particular tunes from the cinema that just make the story come alive or punctuate a favourite scene, or indeed have you discovered wonderful songs/singers/bands from having watched a film?

Off the top of my head, I'm thinking about scores by Angelo Badalamenti and songs sung by Julee Cruise in Twin Peaks or the newly featured bands performing at The Roadhouse in the credits for the new series thus far. Actually AB's score for Lynch's The Straight Story too! And then of course, Ennio Morricone scores (Cinema Paradiso, Once Upon A Time In The West), or Gustavo Santaolalla (Motorcycle Diaries, Brokeback Mountain). O mio babbino caro - from the opera Gianni Schicchi which is used in the film, A Room With A View -- although I always preferred the other key aria used in this film Chi il bel sogno di Doretta - from the opera La Rondine. Or songs such as Don't You (Forget About Me) - Simple Minds used in The Breakfast Club and Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now - Starship used in Mannequin and 80s fabulousness! And there's loads, loads more!!

Which are the ones that you enjoy?

Yes!!! To the Lost Boys. I'm going to have to put that on now, good call. And Platoon, some great ones -- I'm lining up White Rabbit - Jefferson Airplane to play too now!

I thought Ramin Djawadi's soundtrack to the Westworld TV series was amazing, really drew me into the world and the narrative, with great reworks of Radiohead and The Rolling Stones.

I remember going to see "The Jazz singer" with Neil Diamond and loved the soundtrack.

There and to the left a bit

The Commitments soundtrack was obviously an integral part of the story, but made the film what it is.

Can remember as a 12 year old sitting watching as that iconic text drifts into the distance and the just as iconic music played over the opening credits of Star Wars.

The Pirates Of The Caribbean soundtrack is also pretty evocative.

Moulin Rouge was obviously a musical but the choice of songs made the film.

Yes to Platoon, yes to Lost Boys and yes to that scene in Apocalypse Now! too!!

I had the same with the TV series, True Blood, which always ended with a different tune on the credits, discovered some great ones that way!

To be honest no! I enjoy it sober. But that's just the oddity of me.

I love Howard Shore's evocative, atmospheric scores in LoTR, Seven and Gangs of New York to name a few films. And Philip Glass gives me a lady boner .

In terms of bands on shows? I really like the True Blood and The Originals OST - so many amazing artists feature and they're unashamedly epic. Quite often there are covers that are spookily wonderful. The scenes where Hayley and Elijah kiss generally have epic bands like London Grammar.

Oh and Stranger Things soundtrack - so good .

Ry Cooders' Paris Texas for the film of the same name is amazingly evocative.

And perhaps seems cheesy at first but... Star Wars. John Williams. A proper symphony, complete with themes for characters and situations.

I've never seen any of Twin Peaks but i know Johnny Jewel (who i hugely admire) was involved in the soundtrack for the new season with his band chromatics. I'm tempted to give the new season a go just to see and hear JJ and chromatics in it but do i need to have watched the earlier seasons to make sense of it? (soz, bit off topic!)

Oh you've hit another genre I love there! Bladerunner is one of my favourite movies -- Vangelis!! And the soundtrack to Drive (The Chromatics, who are featured in the new Twin Peaks series, oh and A Real Hero -- College feat. ennio morriconi and sergio leone .... they're the unbeatable rat pack of film making ..... this scene and the music (ecstacy of gold) exemplify how awesome scoring and excellent cinematography add up to so much more than the sum of their parts ..... makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up on end

Sadly it would ruin ever watching TP to join it late (and as it's my favourite TV show I thoroughly recommend watching it properly but, I was oooooooh as soon as I saw them -- it was good, but made more so by loving the show and knowing the venue where they played and how it used to be Julee Cruise in the initial show doing the live gigs there!) They play out the last scene of part 2 in the new series, episode 1&2 are combined -- so from 102nd minute 19th second onwards is where you want -- but if you ever intend to watch the programme only watch that section and it won't ruin anything for later!! Glorious!!

I couldn't see anyone mentioning Vangellis's score for Bladerunner, but without that soundtrack it would be a different film altogether. It hits the atmosphere to perfection.

Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait has amazing sound design and music by Mogwai, who also did the incidental music for Les Revenants and it's beautiful. There are too many soundtracks I love to start listing all of them but some favourites that don't often get a mention because they're not that bombastic are Withnail and I (the choice of existing music is spot on and the melancholy inherent in the original score by David Dundas is stunning), Paul Leonard-Morgan's score for Dredd (especially the slow-mo scenes) and the reinvention of some great tunes for Sucker Punch. Luke Cage on Netflix has a phenomenal soundtrack as well.

Pulp Fiction and Resevoir Dogs have some fantastic tracks as well , Tarantino has a good ear for obscure music that fits well in the film alongside better known music, can't hear " Stuck in the middle with you " without wanting to do a little dance holding a cutt-throat razor

Not a film thing, but the excellent Manchester poet Mike Garry sometimes performs with a string quartet playing Philip Glass music. It's incredibly evocative. I was in tears last time I saw them together.

I suspect he'll do something stunning on recent events in his home city in time.

My favourite film soundtrack is probably David Shire's one for the original of the Taking of Pelham 123. Influenced by Schoenberg and jazz and sounds just like New York.

A great moment for me is the gorgeous folk tune (Willow's Song) that plays as Britt Ekland tries to seduce Edward Woodward in the original Wicker Man.

The fact she's dancing naked may have something to do with it (ok, it's not really hear l, it's a body double, but the 14 year-old in me refuses to acknowledge it)!

Also love Mick Jagger/Ry Cooder doing Memo from Turner in Performance (mad film!).

Think he deliberately bought it out around the same time as 'Drive' to make a point

"Having just fallen back into the wonderful world of Twin Peaks, I've been thinking about how the music enhances the experience of the programme massively -- as is often much more the typical case in the movies.

Do you have particular tunes from the cinema that just make the story come alive or punctuate a favourite scene, or indeed have you discovered wonderful songs/singers/bands from having watched a film?

Off the top of my head, I'm thinking about scores by Angelo Badalamenti and songs sung by Julee Cruise in Twin Peaks or the newly featured bands performing at The Roadhouse in the credits for the new series thus far. Actually AB's score for Lynch's The Straight Story too! And then of course, Ennio Morricone scores (Cinema Paradiso, Once Upon A Time In The West), or Gustavo Santaolalla (Motorcycle Diaries, Brokeback Mountain). O mio babbino caro - from the opera Gianni Schicchi which is used in the film, A Room With A View -- although I always preferred the other key aria used in this film Chi il bel sogno di Doretta - from the opera La Rondine. Or songs such as Don't You (Forget About Me) - Simple Minds used in The Breakfast Club and Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now - Starship used in Mannequin and 80s fabulousness! And there's loads, loads more!!

Which are the ones that you enjoy?

I've never seen any of Twin Peaks but i know Johnny Jewel (who i hugely admire) was involved in the soundtrack for the new season with his band chromatics. I'm tempted to give the new season a go just to see and hear JJ and chromatics in it but do i need to have watched the earlier seasons to make sense of it? (soz, bit off topic!)

I wa typing about them being in it (see my first response to you) and then had to answer the phone!! Snap! Sadly it would ruin ever watching TP to join it late (and as it's my favourite TV show I thoroughly recommend watching it properly but, I was oooooooh as soon as I saw them -- it was good, but made more so by loving the show and knowing the venue where they played and how it used to be Julee Cruise in the initial show doing the live gigs there!) They play out the last scene of part 2 in the new series, episode 1&2 are combined -- so from 102nd minute 19th second onwards is where you want -- but if you ever intend to watch the programme only watch that section and it won't ruin anything for later!! Glorious!!"

The warriors soundtrack really helped put me in the moment, I watched that film so many times growing up.

"Having just fallen back into the wonderful world of Twin Peaks, I've been thinking about how the music enhances the experience of the programme massively -- as is often much more the typical case in the movies.

Do you have particular tunes from the cinema that just make the story come alive or punctuate a favourite scene, or indeed have you discovered wonderful songs/singers/bands from having watched a film?

Off the top of my head, I'm thinking about scores by Angelo Badalamenti and songs sung by Julee Cruise in Twin Peaks or the newly featured bands performing at The Roadhouse in the credits for the new series thus far. Actually AB's score for Lynch's The Straight Story too! And then of course, Ennio Morricone scores (Cinema Paradiso, Once Upon A Time In The West), or Gustavo Santaolalla (Motorcycle Diaries, Brokeback Mountain). O mio babbino caro - from the opera Gianni Schicchi which is used in the film, A Room With A View -- although I always preferred the other key aria used in this film Chi il bel sogno di Doretta - from the opera La Rondine. Or songs such as Don't You (Forget About Me) - Simple Minds used in The Breakfast Club and Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now - Starship used in Mannequin and 80s fabulousness! And there's loads, loads more!!

Which are the ones that you enjoy?

I've never seen any of Twin Peaks but i know Johnny Jewel (who i hugely admire) was involved in the soundtrack for the new season with his band chromatics. I'm tempted to give the new season a go just to see and hear JJ and chromatics in it but do i need to have watched the earlier seasons to make sense of it? (soz, bit off topic!)

I wa typing about them being in it (see my first response to you) and then had to answer the phone!! Snap! Sadly it would ruin ever watching TP to join it late (and as it's my favourite TV show I thoroughly recommend watching it properly but, I was oooooooh as soon as I saw them -- it was good, but made more so by loving the show and knowing the venue where they played and how it used to be Julee Cruise in the initial show doing the live gigs there!) They play out the last scene of part 2 in the new series, episode 1&2 are combined -- so from 102nd minute 19th second onwards is where you want -- but if you ever intend to watch the programme only watch that section and it won't ruin anything for later!! Glorious!!

Oh gosh, I concur!! Beautiful.

In fact any track from that movie. Sofia Coppola (or whoever it was) has a knack of fitting the perfect track into the perfect scene!!

You've reminded me of another Sofia Coppola film with a brilliant soundtrack. The Virgin Suicides' by Air."

"The warriors soundtrack really helped put me in the moment, I watched that film so many times growing up.

Also The wanderers, it was the same kind of gang type film but much softer and the soundtrack was awesome, four seasons, surfaris and obviously Dion demucci "

Love The Ry Cooder soundtracks esp Southern Comfort also the score from the movie Ali has some hair raising soul stuff,For the Bowie fans Christane F a german movie well worth a look or rather a listen as the subject matter[ heroin ]is rather dark.

Hanna is an exceptional sound track but I am a chems fan!

Toy story is a good shout actually, sentimental for me.

An off the wall one... Good morning Vietnam is excellent.

Lost boys, mannequin, Ferris Buellers Day Off, Snatch, Trainspotting, Apocalypse Now, Platoon and a few of the 80s brat pack films.

Lord of Rings, yeah I said that!

2 great shouts there pal i remember one xmas a mate bought me Christiane F on DVD. I broke up with my ex a week or so later and watched Christiane about 5 times over that xmas, 'twas a bleak one!
