.

A lot of call centres work on a random generated number being generated which is then put out for the next available member of staff to take.

The fact that you answer is just chance and obviously at that point no one is available to take the call.

But yes is bloody annoying

As with all telesales staff, when they ring me trying to sell me something I turn it around and try to sell them double glazing - they usually hang up.

Yes I agree, we should boycott companies that export British jobs.

When we are all unemployed because all the jobs have gone abroad..we wont be able to afford to buy their tat anyway!

These companies are just greedy twats with no thought for the workers of this country!

Seems they are working off automatic dialers. The system will ring a selection of numbers until someone answers.

Depending on where they are based (UK or overseas) they will have strict limits on silent calls such as you are getting.

If you don't want to receive call you can register on the telephone preference list. It may take a few months to work it through depending when companies buy their data. Again the success of this will depend on where the company is based as I believe overseas companies are not bound by the TPS.

Guess where I work

That's all well and good but how will you motivate the great unemployed to take up home when they can earn the same if not more sat on their arse???

Watched a programme once where people leaving a job were offered a job picking in a field and the majority of answers were 'give it to the polish'

It isn't a person calling you, it's a machine, and when you answer the phone the call is then diverted to an operator. If they're all on a call already you get put onto a holding pattern.

I used to do this myself. Double glazing, replacement windows and doors, conservatory awnings - "And would any of your colleagues be interested in a visit from a member of our sales team? Are you sure they wouldn't? Could you pass me over to one of them?"

Now I just screen all calls between 6pm and 9pm.

J got made redundant, went to the jobcentre, and they made her jump through hoops for less than £50 a week.after 6 months they stopped all payments! we have both never claimed a thing before this! it's not as easy as you think to get the money you are entitled to through paying your national INSURANCE for years. Unless you are a professional scrounger!

When we get these we put the phone by the TV so they can listen in. If they want to spend their money on wasted phone-time it's up to them. It's quite funny when the person comes on and tries to converse with the evening news report!

Most reputable British call centres will now present a CLI number that should at least serve you a recorded message explaining who's called.

However, there are lots of callcentres who are either not DMA members, or are off shore and therefore hard to control. They're much more likely to produce ghost calls by overcooking their diallers.

Its an auto-dialler calling. If too many people have answered their phones, they may be no staff left for your call. If you call back, number will be unlisted, as it has come via a switchboard. As you have answered, you will be redialled periodically until someone does get to speak to you. It will almost certainly be from overseas. I would say that it is highly unusual that no-one is available to speak to you after several attempts, maybe they are short-staffed too!

I used to work in a debt management co with auto dialler. It dials a number then when answers, clicks to the file. Great if a new debt and no notes. But get Mr (or Mrs) 'stick your debt up your arse' then the notes are vast, but you can't pick up the jist of the person before they abuse you down the phone because you really donlt know why you are calling. Soul destroying, lasted a week

"As with all telesales staff, when they ring me trying to sell me something I turn it around and try to sell them double glazing - they usually hang up. "

You can have a lot of fun with these people if it is a human. Try some of these;

Keep saying "what do you want" over and over again until they swear at you or hang up.

When you get those(usually scottish) saying "I'm ringing you on behalf of BT" say "do you work for BT?" They will insist they are working 'on behalf of BT' and the trick is to find out which company they actually work for then suggest that they have rung you under false pretenses and should go away.

Ask for the harassers' home number and say you will ring them later to say whether you will buy the service or product on offer. When they question or refuse say "well you've got my number so it's only fair you give me yours"

This is only a few examples of my repetoire.

I'm sure there are those who will say that these people are only doing their job, well I'm sorry but if that job involves anonymously harassing me or mine particularly from some call center in india or the like, well, they should get another job.

depends why they are calling. Get me in a good mood and I might answer a survey. If they are polite and hang up when i say I am not interested, fine they are doing a job.

If they are pushy, rude or aggressive.. and I'm bored I will use some of the suggestions above.

Getting the dialler settings right can be hard work - the difficulty of the task is in inverse proportion to the number of staff you have on the floor at any given time.

So you may have 40 seats with 100% occupancy, but if you set the dialler to run at a rate more suited to 50 seats, or if you have a wide variation in call length, then you'll get ghost calls. Used to be that the DMA standard for ghosts was 3% per shift - in my experience a 7.5% drop in occupancy or actual call times of 60% plus or minus the mean was likely to produce either ghost calls or staff sitting round waiting for the dialler to deliver the next call.

i have lots of fun with them when they call. especailly if they want to talk to FSM.. i tell them to hold on while i untie him.. then pretend to shout at FSM ,saying things like" you have been a bad boy,, you should have pleasured me for longer" and smack the paddle down on the bed... they normally have hung up by then.

Best way to get rid of these "cold callers" is when they invariably say, "How are you today??", you answer with....

"Boy, if you've had the day I've had?" and then launch into a series of problems, (all fictitious of course!), a death on the family, the daughter's pregnant - simply invent every known problem you can think of one after the other!

BUT IMPORTANTLY, don't let them get a word in edgeways; (they are paying for the call), and they soon hang up!
