I thought my boss was alright to this morning..

I have been of work with compassionate leave last 5 days due to father being in hospital. That is fine I called to say look i am coming back Monday but father is still in and can we arrange something with hr regarding options...

I explained the situation...I want to go back to work but I don't know how i will cope...the other option is I get signed off from my doctors with stress.....bur my dr will not see me before Monday....

What the hell should I do!!!!!!

While I sympathise with your predicament, you should remember that your boss has a job to do and responsabilities too.

I've always tried to be open and fair with everyone, but some people really do take the piss sometime and try to take advantage of any situation that may arise. Even with compassionate leave

Plenty of people's Grannies have died more than once, and it was easy to predict when someone was about to try and pull a fast one.

I'm not saying that your situation isn't worthy of compassion, far from it, and I genuinely hope you get sorted soon.

If you have taken all your allotted compassionate leave, you might have to use your holiday entitlement or, as you've already suggested, see your doctor and sign off sick.

Best of luck

"Plenty of people's Grannies have died more than once, and it was easy to predict when someone was about to try and pull a fast one."

I worked in a factory for a while when I left school and there'd be a bomb scare every time there was a big footy match on the telly. They had to let everybody go home by law, though anybody who wanted to could keep working. Most people went home in fear of their lives.

What the OP hasn't said is if the time off he is having is paid leave or not.

If he is asking for unpaid leave then his boss has more room to be flexible, but if he's asking for an undetermined period of paid abscence then I'd be inclined to refuse it and tell him he needs to use his holiday entitlement first.

You should have just left, I would. They would not have dared take any action.

problem is at the time i was a home carer in the community and had vulnerable clients who needed personal care and medications etc.. i couldn't just leave my clients. However none of the other colleagues took any clients off me to lighten my work load.

i have walked out of two jobs cos of wanker bosses.

one had the habit of ringing 10 minutes before home time and giving me an 'urgent project' that he needed for a meeting in the morning so i'd be there another 2/3 hours preparing it

he tried it once on my mums birthday when we had a family meal planned. i explained the situation and pointed out that i had made him aware of it the previous week.

he got distinctly shitty to which i pointed out that i had worked my contracted hours, i wasn't asking to leave early, just leave on time.

the response i got was 'well, if that's your position, i will have to re-evaluate your position with this business'

to which my reply was 'well, if that's your position, i'll re-evaluate it for you right now. You can stick your job up ur arse'

And with that, i collected my stuff, left and never went back.

Vive la revolucion !

Trust me hon, the world won't stop turning if you take a little 'me' time every now and then. They'd have had to find someone to cover you or they'd have been facing a huge backlash if someone needing care in the community suffered because they didn't, wouldn't or couldn't get someone else to cover.

Sadly worker's rights are diminishing, IMHO, and bosses know this ever so well. Compassionate leave is likely to be a benefit that is not a right, but is discretionary, and so would be best handled with gratitude, and some flexibility on our part as employees. Whilst it's not right that we should grovel to be treated with humanitarian respect, we do need to toe the line somewhat, especially where we've already had more than we're contractually entitled to as a minimum. You can see any NHS doctor, should there be appointments, though as it's late on Friday it's looking less likely that you may have an opportunity to get in somewhere. Worst case, you'd pay to see a GP privately to get signed off, I guess.

That said, isn't self-certification for sickness the norm now? I'm guessing that your compassionate leave isn't counted as sick time, so your time off as sick could start being counted from now.

Think also what you could offer in return for your employer - apart from having to give 100% anyways, that we're expected to do in today's climate. If there's something that you have to offer in return for some extra time, then this may make them equally flexible etc.

There's no perfect solution when a boss isn't as giving as you'd like/need: leaving a job isn't easy, but is a reserve final option, IMO.

Ok Mike... You have explained why you have been off work... Sorry to hear that.

You have explained that you will or may need additional time off... BUT... When you rang in... Did you speak to your Boss and what did HE say... ???
