"The members of my team who have a professional registration claim on their expenses and I am happy to pay it. " A lot of companies do as it is benefitting their operation to have their staff with the best certification. Its dog eat dog without it. Sassy - the money goes to the professional bodies who support their members with latest information in the industries. They hold seminars and tutorials etc. where other professionals keep in touch. AS for the money going for recertification - well I believe its just milking money if its not introducing anything new re trainig - just a renewal service.

"Truck drivers have to pay- £40 for a digital tachograph card lasts 5 years. Around £400 every 5 years for DCPC(training that tells you how to do your job) £100 for medical every 5 years from the age of 45. All very rarely paid for by employers." you beat me to it not to mention the cost of obtaining the licences in the first place for new people in the market now they have to take 7.5 tonne licence then HGV2 (class C) then HGV1 (class C+E) If they want to further their trade there are also a variety of additional licences to go for such as : HIAB (lorry mounted crane), ADR (chemicals / hazardous goods), MOFFETT (vehicle mounted FLT), LEVEL D (aviation security) to name but a few. Most of them have a 'lifespan' and need renewing / refreshing on a periodic basis, again sometimes at the drivers own expense. Again, generally employers will recruit the skills rather than train but some will pay for refresher training once employed.

"door stewards for sia cards @£230 every 3 years" Yes, SIA licences do cost that every 3 years, even for the renewals. As in a lot of professions, the employers pick up the bills, but unfortunately, there are some companies who won't. I know of a security company who only pays their personnel at National Minimum Wage level, expect their staff to pay their own Licence renewal fees, AND..... for completing the employers "section" of the renewal form, will bill the employees too at a cost of £50. Then, they charge for the uniforms too! And then they wonder why they have a high staff turnover??
