I genuinely believe this to be true. Didn't he complain when Rage at the Machine got to Christmas no.1 because it ruined all his work on his manufactured "band"?

Of course it's true, all the acts are invited in advance, the ones that get to the final are chosen by Cowell and his cronies, yes there's a public vote, but even that is influenced by judges comments, placement in the running order, bells and whistles added to the individual acts such as backing dancers etc.

Along with X Craptor it has to be one of the most manufactured programmes on telly!!
