little house on the praire

My son had not had a "proper" job since leaving college last year, he had been doing 10 hrs a week cleaning to stay of the dole(same money as dole). A few weeks ago he managed to get a job, its still partime but 19 hours a week and chances of overtime when hes been there awhile.

Bless him hes not academic and hes tried everything from mechanics, land based studies to building.

Anyhow hes been at this job two weeks and absolutly loves it, hes full of enthusiasm, every one likes him. It is a care assistant for people with dementia. It suits his personality as he has a really caring natural and already saying its not just looking after them but showing them love and affection. Hes taken to it like a duck to water, they have already mentioned to him about starting a NVC.

So im really proud that fineally hes doing something he really enjoys.

His funniest experience so far is with an old lady, she keeps coming up behind him, pinching his bum and telling him she wants him lol

Excellent for him and also for you Just goes to show if you keep on trying, eventually something will fall into place.

Funnily enough the Mrs works in a care home for people with dementia and she tells me some funny stories.

Good luck to your son!

that's exactly how i started out.. he'll love it.

domestic assistant then HCA.. i've never looked back. Go Callum, i'll be honest and say that in some parts i found the NVQ2 a little bit of a pain in the arse but only because it was completely new to me.. the NVQ3 was easier especially after id worked in the Nursing home for a while and experience in healthcare counts far more than paperwork (in my opinion)

Really good luck to him, not many men could do a job like that

yes the job can be hard but also rewarding

its surprizing what the rascals will do for male staff that they wont do for us and how they like to flirt and mother them

wishing him well with his nvq.

When he was doing the cleaning i was extremely proud of the fact that he walked or cycled 3 miles there and 3 miles back to get exactly the same money he would get if he claimed dole

What gets me is they want people in work but then they expect you take work for nothing if you try to get a P/T job. You can earn £5 before they take dole money off you. You could be working 20 hours for a fiver, which you'd probably spend in travel and eating at work.

The Daily Mail set will claim people should be taking these jobs anyway for less than minimum age but you can be sure none of them are going into their boss's office and offering to work for slave wages.

The dole did have a scheme a while ago where if you set up your own business you got roughly a year's dole, £2000, to assist you. Why they can't supplement people trying to do the right thing in a P/T job I don't know. Isn't Capitalism based on incentive? They won't even pay travel costs to a job inter_iew anymore.

pity others are not brought up the same and think the dole and benefits are a right and never work a day in their lives!! good luck to your son and get him to speak to a local college and his employers as there are now £2500 grants for employers to pay his wages whilst he studies and to help him!!

We hear so much abou young people not wanting to work, it's heartwarming indeed to hear stories like this.

As Rugby said, I'm sure no matter what job your son did you'd have been proud of him. Well done him!

Diamond, at 19 he has a golden opportunity to get into a fledgling industry. Tell him to try and get into the PV Solar industry, it is about to grow enormously and now is the time to get the training needed to be able to install solar panels.

If he's ok working at heights he'll do well and earn some serious wonga.

(don't let the heights thing worry you, all buildings now have to have scaffolding up to the roof if that's where you're going to be working and all workers on roofing jobs have to wear safety harnesses. He'd have to be a complete dope to fall and it doesn't sound like he is).

This is what I'm training to do now.

From one proud mum to another. Congratulations on having such a lovely well adjusted hard working son.

My congratulations to him too, this is not merely a job, this is a calling.... a vocation.

Not everyone is capable of such work and for a young lad like him to take to it so easily I wish him all the best and a long and happy career. xxx
