Country and western music does absolutely nothing for me that twang of the guitar just makes go straight to the off button on the radio.....do you love it ...or hate it or whatever ???.

Bad country music is truly sickening, but there's loads of guys n gals that are a million miles from the redneck thing.

Gillian Welch is an amazing songwriter. Going back further, guys like Gram Parsons and Townes Van Zandt were amazing too.

Real, proper stuff - and about as far from Garth effing Brooks and Toby effing Keith as its possible to get.

I love the older country music. The authentic stuff. It could be a bit of Hank Williams. Willie Nelson. Guy Clark. Townes Van Zandt. Johnny Cash. Those artists are the real deal.

Anything from Garth Brooks onwards is fucking dreadful! Just bad pop music in a cowboy hat.

and here was i thinking it couldn't possibly be literal testicles on a truck. i was very wrong it seems. some people are very odd!...i hope that particular fad doesn't jump the pond

A lot of country is america's "pop" music, and seems very made to order, A lot of the "newgrass" and "americana" stuf is great though. As above, Gillian Welch and David Rawlimgs are class, Alyson Krauss, Old Crow Medicine Show, Amos Lee are good and lately Brothers Landreth (countryish) have an excellent album, and try Cadillac Three for some heavy counter/southern rock fun. Oh, and dont forget bluegrass and the banjos!

It's harsh on those great artists out there to lump them in with that stuff, especially when many of them rail and fight against it.

I'm not some über-country fan at all, but away from the "industry", there are some great, principles, soulful artists.

If you've never seen Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings, watch them. That's the real deal, the real "soul" of the US.

Some of kirsty MacColls country influenced stuff isn't bad.. some Shawn Colvin too. Beyond that meh.

Kurt Wagner and his "lambchop" band aren't bad, not country in the traditional sense though.

I like a fair bit of country influenced music rather than out and out country if you know what I mean. I've a couple of lambchop albums which I really like, Johnny Cash, Gene Clark's 'No Other' album is an all time favourite... Jerry Lee Lewis reinvented himself as a country singer after his initial burst of fame and some of that stuff is great.
