Planting i hot weather

Not really advisable during hot, dry conditions but if you're going to do it here's a little tip you might want to take on board.

Firstly presoak the rootball by sitting the pot in a bucket of water for an hour or so. Dig the planting hole, plant, backfill and firm as per normal but only to 3/4 full. Add water level to the top of the planting hole (this acts as a reservoir and prevents water running away and being wasted). Allow to drain and complete the backfilling and firm. Job done.

Possibly leave them with a little of the soil depression (how sad), so there's a holding spot for water to soak downwards

If you cover the ground with gravel/bark or what ever, it will help keep the ground moist so you have to water less, even in hot weather.

Or simply keep the soil surface loose with a hoe. This creates it's own mulch preventing growth, cracking, water loss through capillary action and helps keep the soil below cool.
