Governments have always shared intelligence and always hidden things from one another. Someone leaking a piece of information is another way of saying,we know something but can't say it officially.

Are we now going to start beating up on other countries or organisations in response to the actions of a pound shop terrorist who killed and injured children.

Yes get some perspective... all governments leak there is no such thing as information security and the role of the press is to shine a light on those dark corners of all activities state or otherwise to check the powers of the state.

How does this make a nation stupid?

Perhaps instead of throwing bricks at each other and trying to create controversies...

We should remember and respect the memory of all those bruised and broken this week rather than fighting amongst ourselves

To be fair to the OP I don't think he's branding the whole nation as 'stupid'. As far as I interpreted it he's talking about whoever leaked those pictures to the NY Times against the (supposed

) wishes of the UK Intelligence services.

Now leaks DO tend to happen for a reason, I wonder what the agenda is?

Ditto the constant hate filled bile by some on here who blame all of the Islamic faith for the actions of some..

Releasing the Intel is not something new with the US intelligence services and should be addressed..

The NYT printing them is crass and deeply insensitive to lie families of the victims..

Its a big game of chess, sometimes you use your pawns as defence and sometimes you use them as bait but there always part of your overall strategy.

Nothing gets leaked to the press and less they want it leaking and even then no major outlet prints it unless it's been given the ok by a higher authority

The truck driver in Germany last year was Tunisian though made escape via bus through the Netherlands onto France, then Italy and was shot dead by police making a random check.

The first 24 hours of an investigation are essential. The leaking of information to the US news networks first about his name, then crime scene photos has really got to hamper the speed at which authorities can act. Anyone associated with the guy will have the heads on what information they have and possibly flee. As opposed to getting snatched, searched and questioned.

Our intelligence goes through gchq who share relevant information with the US , they then share it with several departments who it might pertain to.

So this info might have gone through the CIA the FBI and quite a few US army bomb making experts.

The only way Manchester police could withhold intelligence is by not sharing it beyond Manchester police which frankly I doubt.

Statements like those are politically made, its a war of words with the US intelligence services

Couldn't agree more Hine. Unfortunately man has an innate desire to fight and blame others.... It takes restraint of ourselves, control of our emotions and understanding that others should come first, to do otherwise is to feed our inner unchecked desires that bleed our society and spread rot which has no benefit than to feed our selfishness.

Get a perspective guys and think before your trigger finger keyboards start to smoke. Few understand certainly on here you are known for what and how you respond. Peace guys.

An attempt to show him that they wield a degree of power and they can embarrass him when they want.

And, let's not forget, the NYT has said that access to the photos and information was given by British sources. So an intelligence leak on the US side may not even be the biggest issues here.

And lastly, someone will have to explain to me one day why British people call Americans "yanks." In the US that term is reserved for northerners....so I'd be interested in the etymology. I guess I could go to Google, but I'm lazy at the moment.

Various possible origins of Yankee; most believable is a corruption of the old Dutch word jankeys or Jan Kaes; referring to various Dutch settlers by the English or the Dutch name Janke. Was used insultingly by English settlers about the Dutch settlers. Then turned round by the zDutch and used as an insult about the Brits.

Simply delay releasing info to the Us agencies until after investigations under way/done - not sure how much was started when the name was released but even this could give enough time for connected people to escape

That's not the point; leaking intelligence alerts the bad guys that we know stuff about them; so they can evade, or hide it.

It also may give away the fact that we have moles inside the bad guys' organisations, so they are at risk, or we have to shut down the operation.

Setting up insiders is very difficult, dangerous and takes sometimes years. And relies on trust that we don't give them away.

Lose that and there is no more intel.

The perpetrators name.

They released it prior to arrests being made of his associates. The naming jeopordised them being arrested safely, as they would be pre-warned of security services coming for them.

More importantly, his accusations of fake news can now be questioned. If they are publishing accurate names and photographs via US Officials, it gives them credibility on any White House leaks that he's tried to disorientate public attention from.. ?
