Police background checks.

There are an increasing number of jobs where (quite correctly) you are required to undergo CRB /background checks before you can be appointed.

Breakfast news article this morning....apparently not so for the police.

They are now RETROSPECTIVELY doing checks. Tens of thousands of serving officers and PCSOs have not been checked.

In Cumbria it's 90% of serving officers! They are "planning to embark on a programme of retrospective checks".

I just think it's ridiculous.......

In an ideal world, all the checks would have been done before they started working as police/pcso.

However, surely it is better to get them working, rather than wait for the stupid bureaucracy.

You know the outcome. They will do the checks and they will all be fine. Maybe a small number will have some minor offence from years ago that is irrelevent. They are not going to turn up the fact that most of the new recruits are murderers, rapists, terrorists etc.

It's all just BBC make a drama out of nothing stuff.

You can see the sense in it though.

One of the first things young kids get taught is 'If you are lost ask a police man' so surely it is better to know the guy you are actively encouraging your youngster to seek out is honest and upstanding...

Except that they cannot ask a policeman if they are sitting at home, waiting for the background checks to come through, before they can start work!

And the days of asking a policeman are over. They hardly ever patrol now. They respond to calls, and most kids would just ask Google now.

It's DBS now better known as disclosure Scotland and not worth the paper it's printed on.

Only works if you actually have been caught and charged with an offence.

We own a security company so deal with this on a regular basis.

You are only correct M and M in relation to standard DBS checks.

Anyone working for the police ought to be submitted for an enhancged DBS check which ought to show additional information.

I think people would be surprised just how many institutions have staff who started before 2002 and haven't been checked.

Wouldn't it be possible for the police to do their own informal check?

It's laughable, yet I've had to jump through hoops and get a DBS check and that's for a volunteer position x

I suspect checks were done when they started and no programme is in place to redo the checks so someone has probably realised that 10or 15 year old CRB is pointless

It is extremely unlikely that a second offiversion could be arrested and cautioned or charged without their superiors being made aware.

I'm not sure what point the OP is actually making or what he thinks is ridiculous

How is not knowing a potential employee has been charged with an offence not worth the paper it is written on?

It misses unknown offenders, but is still useful for those previously caught.

Kind of a agree with you but if they check them all now and even find 1 who is potentially a danger to children then it's worth doing? The systems not perfect but it's the best we've got
