We must leave earth in 100 years

To survive.. Professor Hawkins said it.

It's a damning statement for the human race.

I read 'easter island, a warning for the future' about how the island was populated, and stripped of its flora and forna within a few hundred years, turning ludh paradise into a barron rock.

Seems like we are just repeating thid on a global scale. Any thoughts?

I think Mr Hawkins is out of his league if he honestly believes that, we will find ways to progress no matter what the future holds for us as humanity and the entire animal kingdom. It would take something bigger than an asteroid that wiped out a lot of life on earth to kill us all off.

I think we are learning from our mistakes, but making new ones (too much plastic is being chucked into the sea via waste dumping in rivers etc) but hopefully we will learn and survive as a human race and look after the planet that we are naturally born to look after .

Population control is what's needed. It's ok the big global powers are mobilising for a massive global war to strip 50% off the world population (orchestrated by the Illuminati).

The human race will ultimately survive but it'll be adios to us disposables ..

Happy Friday everyone!!

I think really intelligent life would choose to obliterate us now. Maybe artificial intelligence could develop, take a very quick peek and end it, if it's been built correctly. It would give the rest of life here a better chance

Huge amounts of speculation both ways.

The biggest problem with Hawkins idea is where to go and how to get there.

The furthest man has travelled so far is the moon and we haven't done that for over 40 years. We no longer have the gibbons to do that without starting again.

Earth might be fucked long-medium term, but is a habitable planet really going to be better than a warming, polluted earth?

I'd like to be optimistic about this, but it's difficult. I'm hoping humanity will find a way.

Leaving earth just doesn't seem viable so we should concentrate on fixing what we have.

So.. The humans are fucked then.. Doubt we'd be missed, seeing as we contribute jack shit to the planet

More than that I'm afraid, any serious figure would have probabilities attached to it. So a serious analysis would say "there is a 1% chance the planet has less than 79 years, a 50% chance it has 103 years and a 99% chance it has less than 321 years". That's just numbers 101, trust me bro, i done like studied them.

I think the 1st recorded prediction of the end of the world was in AD66, and there have been many since, and guess what?

They never seem to predict the end of the world for next week, when we and they are all still around to say - ha, it didn't happen!

Leaving is one thing but where are we going to go? Let's just take a huge leap of faith here and presume we can travel at the speed of light in 100 years time - even then everything is just too damn far away. A quick google suggests the nearest "potential" is something like 16-20 years away at light speed.

Studying the physics to find ways to undo our effect would be better time spent.

We will have neither the capability or a destination available to mass migrate people from this planet in just 100 years. It may sound like a long time but in space travel development terms, its the blink of an eye. It's been 50 years since we first landed on the Moon and we are still only doing low Earth orbital missions and the U.S. don't even have the capability to launch manned missions.

The population growth on this planet is out of control and has doubled to over 7.5 billion in just my life time.

Given the technology gap,we're probably better off trying to make the best of a worsening situation on earth than trying to find a habitable planet and then reaching it with a few billion passengers.
