I have an age limit that is slightly flexible that takes into account "life experience". 30 to 16 is not good in my opinion, not enough life experience at 16 to make a good judgement call.

14 year age gap isn't that bad

Friend of mine met her hubby at 16, there was a 15 year age gap between them, not saying it was all smooth sailing, but they stayed together a lot longer than friends who had only a couple of years between them.

Its a judgement call isnt it? At thirty I cant imagine being interested in a 16 yo child but some seem to be. People decide for themselves I guess but I will admit that if it was my 16 yo I wouldnt be impressed!

a 14yr age gap at 16 is a different kettle of fish to the same age gap at 50.

My sister at 17 went to live with a guy of 48. My mother went spare, but when she realized he treated her like a queen she accepted it. They where blissfully happy for 6 years until he died.

To be honest i dont see what the age difference has to do with him cheating on her, cheating isnt an age thing.

Im kinda with you on this one despite the fact i dated someone when i was 16 and he was 32. At the time i was obviously very young and hung on every word he said.. looking back i just cringe and thought how dodgey the whole set up was .. i was blinded by 'lust' and the fact that someone wanted me and idolised me.

I still do prefer older men (ex being 20 years older than me) but if my daughter came home at 16 id try to be honest about my experiences and just ask her to be cautious. I was happy at the time and cried for weeks when it ended. Learning curve i think

I know of someone whose sister went out with a gent 14y her senior when she was 16/17, and the family was not at all happy.

That was over 15y ago and they are still together, with a family of their own.

So it can work for some.

Let's put it into perspective for a minute. She's barely left school and she's pregnant to a guy who let's face it cant be much younger than her dad. And he's bisexual and cheating on her, it's doomed to failure. Poor girl, if she's lacking life experience she's in for a hell of a big package of it in the next 12 months or so. And he's probably a nonce anyway!!

The age of consent is 12 in many "civilised" countries.

And there are many knowing 12yo girls about.

Boys at that age are usually rather clueless though, IMHO.

our daughter is married to a guy 14 years older than her, don't think I would have been very happy if she had only been 16 when they started seeing eachother though. My biggest fear now is when he is in his 70's and she in her 50's the age gap starts making a difference again - at least in my opinion anyway

Alex is 13 years older than me. I'd be lying if i said i didn't sometimes worry about what might happen when we're older. I hate the idea of him leaving me behind, or me watching him get ill, but that can happen regardless of an age gap, much more important to be with someone you love.

In my opinion I'd be mortified if this happenes to my daughter when she is 16, (14 at the moment) but if it was someone else then I would be more pragmatic. Double standards? Maybe but honest.

The land of grey peas and bacon

Can I just say that at 16 it is not classes as phedophilla because the 16 year old is no longer classed as a "minor" as we all know the age of consent is 16 in this country.

So I think that term needs to be addressed and not used in context to this thread. We all make choices and at 16 my parents let me make my own choices as they wanted me to learn that sometimes we make mistakes.

There is nothing wrong with an age gap in a relationship I used to date this guy that was so hung up on the age gap the relationship was doomed. We can date who we want to date and be who we want to be. As long as we are not breaking any laws doing it.. xx

okay as a mother to several girls around that age.. I would not be impressed.. but it is their lives.. we have to let our children live...

I would be more concerned with if he was a decent guy and would he be looking after her than anything else.. If he was going to stand by her, and be a good dad then the age would be not a factor..

I would be more concerned that my daughter was pregnant at 16 rather than the age and would feel that I had failed on my "dont make my mistakes" lectures..

If they were happy, then I would not really take issue with it.. I know at 16 I was more worldy wise than many older girls I knew at the time..

Ahhh 16: old enough to have sex and get married. Too young to have a glass of champagne to celebrate.

Age ain't nothing but a number. We have to live and let live. But the way I see it is if he/she can't take their older or younger +1 to a family event then neither of them are mature enough to engage in such a relationship. If it's out in the open, it's far less seedy than keeping it a "secret."

Ive realy not got a problem with age gaps as sugar is 12 yrs younger than me but she was almost 19 wen we first got together after a 4 sum i may add, she was working full time ,living on her own and had been since she was 17 and owned a car so she was self sufficiant and very mature for her age which was 18 but youve got2 draw the line when it comes to kids ov the tender age of 16,they fresh out of skwl or may even still be in skwl probarbly proper mixed up coz ov hormones and they tend to rebelle at that age coz they are still immiture children clucking to be adults so why would a 30 yr old bloke wanna be with a adalesant???? that thought is pervy to me tbh

How is it Pervy ermmm a 16 year old boy can be just as pervy as a 30 year old man. In the olden days it was not thought of for 16 year old girls to marry older gentleman.. As long as they are getting treated correctly then who is anyone to judge. A 16 year old can be just as mature as a 18 year old..

Kate had just turned 17 when we met. (was 17yrs and 1 month)

I was 24.

That was back in 1981.

When I first took Kate home to meet my parents, my mom wasn't too happy about it, as she thought Kate was way too young for me.

On the otherside of the coin, Kate's parents were quite happy for us.

Les & I met at the age of 14 for her and 16 ish for me! so no big age gap for us. However, both of us think there is something wrong with a guy or gal of over 30 dating a 16 year old!

At the age of 16, most kids are jumbled up and eager to prove they are adults! Well, ask yourself just how adult you were back then and perhaps this age gap may seem just a little odd, although some of you will no doubt tell us that you were the most mature person at that age!

The use of the word paedophile earlier in the thread was preceeded by the word "Borderline". I can see what they meant. At 15, he would be considered a paedophile and would be put on the sex offenders register and for very good reason. At 16, apparently she is fair game and we shouldn't judge. Seems to me that he is just getting as close to the age he really wants without stepping over the line...

As you get older with more experience, age doesn't make too much difference until you reach the other end of life, but may be hard for other reasons. That is a decision that the couple would make for themselves based on their maturity. No matter how mature some on here think a 16 year old girl is, she is still a child!
