A guy on fab has just offered me a chefs role in a pub. Decent pay and ok hours and easy to commute as it is 10-15 minute walk from my flat opposing the 45min tube journey to where i work now. But he wants me to work weekends

which I've already just recently promised a friend I would cook for the homeless in the soup kitchen he runs every Saturday voluntarily , so in a sticky dilemma. What shall I do. Any suggestions guys?

Do you not currently work weekends then?

You need to do a pros and cons list and figure out if the improved commute and money outweighs the desire to do your voluntary work

Ask for a compromise with the potential new boss. Maybe he'd allow the soup kitchen work.

He said weekends are mandatory. I offered him to work a double shift in the week but he's it having it. So just deciding. My friend and I always wanted to run a soup kitchen and it's something I want to be apart of. If I am honest the job only peaked my interest as it is so local to me.

I wish that was possible. But it's only open from 6pm - 11pm weekdays and open from 11am - 10pm weekends why it's convenient for me on weekends.

Maybe it has at least focused you on considering what you want. Look around for local opportunities which don't require weekend working. I can't imagine the job offered is the only one in the area, not considering what you do and where you are. Good luck, whatever you decide.

I would be saving £129 quid a month on travel if took the job and nope I'd be going back on weekends which I haven't done so since I was 25.

Or take the job and if you get days off in the week run the soup kitchen then.

They need them 7 days a week.

I volunteer on week nights and sadly it's a growth market.

Only you can answer what's best for you. Stick to your beliefs.

If he is a good friend he will know your views and except them.

If you've already said you'd cook in the soup kitchen you made a promise and that shouldn't be broken

My advice, and I don't wish to sound flippant as that's genuinely not my intention, is to go with your gut feel, not what some randomers on an Internet forum say.

You're the only one who knows how you're thinking and feeling, your values and ethics, how much you need the money or the time constraints etc.

I'd wager inside you know what your preference is - go with it! I'm sure the other parties - whatever you choose - will fully understand

Sorry - dont quite understand.

Even if you're working weekends, I'm sure you will have off day during one of the weekdays?

Can you not cook for the homeless during your off day?

I think you should think of your well being first.

OP if you are currently working as a chef and get the weekends off then you're on to a good thing. It's almost unheard of to not work weekends in the catering industry!
