My abs light on the passat came on yesterday after having had a new cv joint fitted the same day and the brakes judder intermittently. Today the abs light has not stayed on but have been told I need a new sensor......but do I really? Any advice gladly received please.

could just be a loose connection, or might have a bit of dirt on the contact.

Hi Jack,

I took it back to the garage this morning that replaced the new cv joint as I looked on the forums last nite and thought it might be dirt or the sensor was not back in the holder properly, but he put it on the ramp and said it needs a new sensor but the lite came on briefly this morning then went off as I was driving.

I hate these 'look at my anti-lock break system' threads.

The fact your breaks did judder would suggest the sensor was doing it's job surely?

The sensor is really just a type of switch, and can be quite delicate. It's very easy to damage it, if you have to move it at any time, such as if you have to work on the hub or brakes, etc.

You can't really test them, they usually either work, or they don't.

If the light comes on and off it could suggest a bad contact, such as ingress of dirt or grease or water, even a greasy finger tip can contaminate it enough to make it play up.

You will have a hard job proving it worked before they worked on it, so just get it repaired and go somewhere else next time, if you think the garage has not been fair with you.

the brakes shouldn't judder. Abs will pump the brakes many times a second so you don't even notice it. The light coming on and going off intermittently suggests a wiring problem.

I would get the brakes checked for wear(the juddering)and have the sensor wiring inspected at the same time. Maybe a mate or someone you trust.

Thanks _eabo, the brakes only juddered when I was coming up to a junction and needed to break slowly but that's intermittent too.

Sounds more like a wiring problem to the sensor - possibly its been damaged when removed and replaced onto the sensor.

When the juddering brake issue occured, did you feel it through the brake pedal? I am quite experienced with driving (and fixing VW's)and when the ABS cuts in you can feel a pulsing through the brake pedal.

If your brake discs re worn, you may notice a slight steering wheel wobble.

I would think that its a bit coincidental tha this issue should occur after the abs has been disturbed by partially dismantling your suspension.

As someone mentioned previously, a bit of flaked off rust might be adhering to trhe abs sensor.

A quick blow (!) with an air line should sort it. You could alsways try a spray with a hose pipe tough the wheel. It might just go away on its own.

Difficult to say without seeing it but it could be the ABS ring (think its on the CV joint) or the sensor the garage that replaced the CV joint should be helpful if not suggest you find another next time i would let them fit the sensor and see what happens, what are they quoting for fitting the sensor, i would hope it was for free as seen as they last worked on it in that area?

The juddering was felt thru the break paddle but only when coming up to a junction fairly slowly and this only started after I had a new cv joint replaced yesterday by this garage. Did get a price for the part which is around £

54 but not a price for fitting it.they did not offer to fit for free, saying this can happen sometimes when this type of work is done. will try an air hose tho.
