We always profile hunt in private mode cause we used to get fed up with getting loads of messages says "you looked out my profile do you want to meet" and then them getting grumpy if wasn't for us.

Because I read a profile before the message, if the profile is shite then I just ignore the message, therefore they have no idea if I have looked or not, so it just saves me a lot of hassle after the fact
