there are some dodgy pages on facebook - i don have kids to worry about but i tend to check up on the pages my friends kids like to ensure they are wholesome family friendly ones

face book can be very dangerous ,, in the last place i worked one of the staff was susspended then arrested and then resigned after comment on her page about the polish workes where we worked ,,, post were put on after a d*unken day/night out and 3 das later she was jobless

She doesn't even know what a 'spastic' is as it isn't a word used a great deal thesedays. She just thinks it's another way of saying 'plonker' or 'idiot'.

And when it comes to McDonalds, she may well be justified.

I think I would think back to the awful things that used to be said in my own peer group when I was that age. Its a teenage cult thing - I doubt she even gives it a second thought what she is liking. Teenagers are all over the place. Goth one minute, angry activist the next, sophisticated 'it' girl another day. I think Facebook gives parents too much of an insight to what should be their private world. I wouldnt want my teenagers looking into this part of my life. If you don't like them being exposed to the internet and all its obvious dodgy content, then remove the offending websites not her freedom of expression now you have allowed her on there. Research about content of sites should be done before you allow them there not once stable door is open, I think.

I won't lose too much sleep over it. Scope used to be called The Spastics Society even though they knew spasticity was only one variant of cerebral palsy.

The term spastic came to be viewed as a general insult partly due to the Blue Peter programmes following the life story of Joey Deacon in an attempt to show disability in a positive light and the society changed to its current name, Scope, on 26 March 1994.

I shall speak to her if only to ensure she knows what the word 'spastic' actually means, and knowing my daughter as I do, I know she'll stop using it. (This is a girl who would like to be a Vet but could never put down an animal because it's cruel).

But, I do have a sense of humour and I'm not going to castrate it to please others who don't share the same humour as I do.

I think letting her know what the term really means is a wise move, as you have said she is an intelligent girl, top of her school year....It would be a crying shame if she went on to further education without such knowledge.

And to be honest Wishy if you think Spastics are humourous then I am glad I don't share the joke with you....because I don't think it is humourous.

I'm sure you wouldn't want me to be anything but true to myself on subjects, we are all different.

If you think I laugh at people afflicted with cerebral palsy you've got me totally wrong. I found humour in her reference to McDonuts employees (is it ok to refer to them as donuts?).

Having used their restaurants up and down the country, as I actually like the food, I have seen the level of idiocy displayed by employees of McDonuts that seems to be pandemic across the whole franchise.

Surly ignoranous assholes is another phrase I'd use to describe them.

I think you have to be carful at what you like and what you post on facebook as there are some people who are out to get people and use facebook as a weapon. I have learnt my lesson with that one as I have issues going on at present with the use of facebook...

Isn't spaz or spakka etc a generic term for an oaf/low brow that has changed so much that it no longer refers to spasticity? Used much the same way as teenage lads also call each other a wanker or a gay? I think theyre using words to rib their mates without thinking of the word origin or its literal meaning. Same as a lot of words generally evolve.

I am sure when those of us who associate the word to what was indeed called the spastic society in our youth (remember the colleciton boxes outside of shops with a wee boy in a caliper) die out the word will remain and it will find its way into the OED eventually with a historic reference.

Teenagers really do have some weird and wonderful expressions.
