I have near filled one of our green wheelie bins with unwanted plants, filled a mighty hole and sanded, primed and painted the arch above the front door.

Tomorrow I plan on finishing and installing the canopy for over the front door and tiling the front step (with locally source welsh slate, fancy!)

What've you been up to thus far this weekend?

3 bits of our decking is rotten (recently moved to this house) and I can't afford to replace it all till next year so I'm having a bash at the 3 lengths myself. Which knowing how clumsy I am will no doubt end in a trip to a&e hahaha

a quandary, could you change my mind?

Had four days of gardening and roof repairs to fit into two.

Remove 3 40ft trees and log up what I could, tidy up hedges, remove as much brambles as possible, sink in newly cut posts for a boundary fence, burn all the rubbish. Mattock up driveway entrance and re-level. Repairs to guttering and replace broken slate tiles and sort slipped ones out.

Yesterday evening it was a problem keeping my eyes open and today has almost been a right off apart from some little automotive repairs. Ache somewhat now

and i sorted out the smelly composting bin, composted everything that needed doing, now i wanna move it to a different location in my garden. will do it monday when kids are back at school.

Don't you put nails in a stump to get it to die???

"how do you remove a tree? do need machinery? mine is only 7 ft tall, i'm just gonna saw it down and kill the stump."

My brother climbed up our 40ft tree with a chainsaw and just snipped it down bit by bit. Took about 30 minutes at most.

I dug the stump out myself over the course of about 4 days. It is finally out of the ground now but too heavy for me to lift into the car to take to the skip

if it's hard to dig out i really cba, but thanks. i was thinking to cut the top off first then cut it lower down as well. just so no accidents happen.

Turned cold again here so went into work early to collect wood then spent two hours in the garage cutting it up for the Aga.

That'll work. You'll get little offshoots for awhile but just cut them off. Eventually the stump will rot and you may be able to dig it out.

Given your tree is only 7ft tall I don't imagine it'll take too long to dig out at all.

What type of tree? You can google the root layout of it to see what you're facing.

I have trimmed a bush that got a wee bit wild. Planted some veg and talked to the chickens. It's all good!

"thanks all. it's an ash tree, apparently they spread pretty wide (i googled). "

My stump was about 14" in diameter, Leylandii. I dug a trench around it, about 2ft deep, cut through any roots I found and then it sort of just came loose. I did use a reciprocating saw on the roots though, probably tough work if you're using a handsaw.

i was using a kitchen knife haha. but it's only about 2 or 3 inches across the trunk so far so it won't be hard to cut down with the right tool.

Another option, given its small size, is winching it out. Assuming you have access to a hand winch and somewhere solid to anchor it.

I've used my 4 ton winch to pop out many a shrub and tree.

And once to accidentally pull over a brick gate post. Turns out the tree was mightier than the wall.
