when I open a pm pane with someone in a private message things are ok ,but if Iclick on say to look at someone else,that pane disappears..question is how do I keep that pane open and click on another name or even possibly open another pane chat with someone else?

If you mean in chat you can't, unless you enlarge the page of the person you are chatting with
