Keeping fit - over 50's

OK folks - specifically aimed at the over 50's...

Are you making an effort to keep in some sort of shape? If so, what do you do? Running? Gym? Cycling?

I seem to go through cycles every year where I get all motivated to go running in Soring and Summer and can easily lose up to 10kgs but then put it all on again in the Winter.

I wish I could just stick somewhere in the middle instead of veering 10kgs between January and June.

I can only walk, or dance on the spot, which I do most days.

I always put some weight back on in winter, because I eat more starchy carbs and walk less, because of the weather.

This year I only put on 6 pounds over winter, but haven't lost anything since January. Once the weather warms up properly I will start walking more.

a quandary, could you change my mind?

I'm not over 50, but it will come.

I always put a bit more weight on in the winter months, it's very annoying, I don't feel my food intake changes. Can't wait to get back to last year's weight.

We do our exercises every morning and afternoon, at least an hours walk every day despite the weather. Copious quantities of sex with other people whenever we can. The sex is our prime motivator for making the effort to keep in shape.

I don't have a car and live in town so I walk lots, I live on my own so do everything and I have loads of interests that keep me busy.

I have to do some core work to keep my back strong though, it's been dodgy since I was 16 and if I slack on that, I soon know it.

I go to the gym 3 times a week. I don't like going but once I'm there I do feel much better. Its a nice gym with a lot of facilities and I find that because I'm paying an amount each month, I don't want to waste money so that motivates me to go.

Nearly at that tipping point...end of the year.

I also tend to vary in weight Summer to Winter, despite living an active life throughout the year. From around May through to around the end of October, the surfing tends to really trim my weight back...the paddle-out is a bitch!!!

I don't want to die too young, so the running stays.

Weight loss or gain is mainly down to diet, exercise has only a small effect on it.

Sorry that is wrong, B spent two months in hospital on a strict diet when she was trying to lose weight and she put weight on.

Weight loss or gain can in some instances be down to diet but in most cases is down to the individual’s metabolic rate and many things can affect that including exercise and even medication taken

This has been dramatically proven with people who have undergone gastric bypass operations (a pouch that can hold approximately 1 ounce of food is formed and connected to a small part of your small intestine) not being able to lose weight even after the majority of their stomach has been bypassed as above and they physically cannot take in much food and they cannot absorb much of the little food they do take in.

Try looking at “Roux-en-Y gastric bypass procedure” and also “physiology of weight regulation” for more information.

It has surprisingly been found that obesity in humans is usually associated with high rates of energy expenditure.

I'm 56 and almost done with my ovaries. A recent 6 day fast and a low carb diet over the last ten years means I stay healthy and of normal weight very easily, unlike my health in my 30's and 40's when I was extremely overweight.

MY BIGGEST TOP TIP IS: Never train in the summer! Train in the winter!

Your metabolism changes, your brown fats start to store up, so if you start doing regular exercise over the winter, you'll be good for summer.

Fuck those who sweat in summer - you'll look great for it instead.

Honestly it works, you'll have more energy you'll notice all the comfort foods you tend to eat over this period decrease also.

JOB DONE.

ACES. Kiss me when you're done.

Shortly to turn 50.

I cycle to work, I cycle for fun, walk wherever I can.

It's not about 'weight loss' per se, it's about changing your attitude & your lifestyle.

Aim to be healthier & the weight will fall away.

My point of view is this, I want to be fit enough to enjoy my later yrs, not gasping for breath from climbing the stairs & living slumped in front of the telly.

All spirits are carb free according to the dietdoctor website (which is a mine of excellent information on low-carbing) which is why I started drinking my bourbon and Tennessee whiskey! You have to watch the mixers of course, they need to be diet or just soda.....trouble is whiskey gave me a hell of a hangover, so I will have to stick with wine if I am likely to drink to excess lol!

It sucks ass.

As I am careful and train really hard with a good mixture of aerobic and anaerobic training.

The lbs just won't shift like they used to!! "

I can relate to this at the moment I seem to put on the lbs really easily especially if I don't watch my diet or I'm slacking on the exercise front.

It's really quite depressing!

couple, us we him her.

"Very apt thread.

Not quite 50 but feel my metabolism really slowly down.

It's always been a bit magoo.

But weight loss these day's is a absolute mission.

I have put on a stone and a half since Xmas and can't shift it.

The odd thing is.

Unlike previously it's going on my waist which is horrible.

My diet is no different from now to last year.

And year before etc...

I gym about 4 times a week and have an active job.

Despite this it feels like I am gaining weight almost daily.

Btw I am diabetic and what my diet closely.

Think it's Purley down to age.

It sucks ass.

Isn't it, what makes it worse is when you have one of those annoying friends who seem to have a black hole where there stomach should be.

Which means that they can eat whatever they want without any weight issues.

Have a word with your doctor about the weight gain.

Diabetes medications are effective at lowering blood glucose, but they also can cause you to gain weight.

It may be as simply as changing any medication you are taking for another medication but obviously this should only be done under medical advice

There was a very interesting program the other day and is related in many ways to this. Studies were showing sleep deprecation, diet and weight gain/loss are all linked up very closely. Studies into prebiotic foods were showing interesting effects in both weight loss and better sleep too. It's one food type that is easily omitted/overlooked in our diet.

Just thought it might interest some.

Dis anyone else seems the program...can't recall which channel.

I fell asleep during it. So does more or less sleep lead to weight gain. Ideally I'd like to lose two stone and have ten hours a night

Not 50, but, cycling. Low impact so less stress on joints, easy to change resistance gradually i.e. harder you pedal, the harder it gets, and thus less chance of injuries than with some other sports.

Fitness curve with cycling is huge, so you get fit quickly and can track gains relatively easily too.

No specialist equipment requi_ed (apart from a bike obviously), its as expensive or as cheap as you want it to be.

Plus, good way of getting out and meeting people. I ride solo quite a lot, but also once a week with a group.
