support bands - concerts

do you like them?

do you think there good to have,

for a warm up before the main event?

or would you prefer to hear the main act, an get your money worth

Depends on the band

If i was to see say Foo fighters, theyd have enough back catalogue to play for hours.

But a band with one album needs support acts to make the gig worthwhile for the money

Also worth bearing in mind that 'Main Acts' may well have a large back catalogue of songs, but they often don't like playing long sets.....

i'm pretty sure most big bands,have been a back up band,at some time or another.

had they not been given this opportunity,they might never have made it.

I like support acts, not always as I've seen some crap ones, but I have also discovered many more that I really got to like.

Many of the now big acts started as a support band.

This is true, I saw Bon Jovi for the first time back in the early 80s they were support act for KISS, and in my opinion the much better band on the day

I have been to many gigs over the years and seen many support acts who are now global giants....

They all have to start off somewhere....

My son plays in a band and I have watched many a touring band come on to the stage after them and walked out as THEY were crap.

Have also witnessed a number of touring bands relinquish their headline status to support my sons band as they were intimidated at the sound check....one in particular were playing T in the Park the very next weekend.

i just seen the band Airborne;

Wow they rock the boat: they supported iron maiden

Airborne is a band to look out for, there from down under an some say they sound like acdc but they dont

have a listen you be surprised

Remember when Lynyrd Skynyrd supported Golden Earring? Hoowee, bad choice, the Earring.

I think support bands are required to build the atmosphere but few people dig them until they become cool, then they say "Oh yeah, I saw them, they were brill."

I remember seeing John "Cougar" Mellencamp, as he known was then, in 1977/78 supporting....ACDC? Thin Lizzy? And Saxon, too. Never thought they'd amount to anything.

I saw Living Colour support Bon Jovi at Edinbugh Playhouse in the 80's Living Colour were superb Bon Jovi were mince

Another standout was Soul Asylum opening for Lemonheads in the Barrowlands , both were outstanding .

We had, muse support skunk anasie, tinderbox support the goo goo dolls, cold play support muse and many more all been good but get few bad ones too

So it's mixed bag but some can be good

I once travelled from Manchester to Portsmouth with a then girlfriend to see a band that was supporting, we spent the night there in a B&B, got to meet the band and they've recognised us since.

I've come away from several gigs appreciating the support band enough to seek more about them, buy CD's and even go to see them when they're headlining.

Very true, there's some great music and great acts out there of all genre's and it's not always the big acts that deliver.

No we did few supports and shifted lots merchant and CDs I keep tryin get more now but any gigs good going or playing at

All bands have to start somewhere. and the fact they've hot off their arse and put in the graft, instead of going on talent shows means they're worthy of my attention. Whether I like them or not is a different matter. But when they hit the bigtime, you can say that you saw them first.
