My new status is something I'd read about not being able to change the inevitable.

Makes me think, do life events happen through decisions we make, or would they ultimately happen regardless of those choices?

I believe if it's meant to be, it'll happen regardless

I'm not sure.

My thoughts on this were aimed at my career path.

Someone once told me I'd be excellent at my chosen career, then life got in the way but now I'm back on track to finish what I started.

It just feels like it was always meant to happen regardless of other events.

Of course I could choose another way. But surely then I would just live with regrets.

I think life is an example of the ripple effect, one action ripples on through...

You get a promotion, your happy, your family as happy for you and it ripples on to everyone you know... Granted its an example of how one action can move on to effect other people.

Combine it with something like being online here at the right time and interacting with someone and you can apply similar principles.

Circumstances, events, random occurances can all initially seem just that until a set of other circumstances "ripple" through.

So fate, destiny or just chance? Or just events we have no control over impacting on....like drops of water in the ocean, we have no control over the tide so all we can do is roll along with it..

If that makes sense

i would say the reason you are backnon track is because you always had it in your head to finish what you started and an oppertunity showed itself and you took it, if you want to believe in fate then fair enough but i think all the good things happening to you are down to you and nothing else x

Perfect sense. I guess my curious mind just wonders if it's all planned out that way whatever decisions we make.

Definitely one to make you wonder.....

Not to be confused with Fatalism

Anyone who tells me they're a Fatalist, I ask them why do they look when they cross the road?

This is how the practical part of my mind works!

I'm the exact opposite I believe, you are the smith of your own destiny.

Same goes with success. You don't wait for an opportunity to become successful, you create the opportunity and that's what makes you successful.

I don't believe anything is inevitable, all it takes is one step to the left or right and everything changes. We choose where we end up, or don't end up I'm my opinion.

No word of a lie. I jumped in my car on my way to work and 'You are my destiny' by Lionel Richie was playing on the radio.

I actually said out loud 'are you taking the p***'

If we have a destiny then we have no free will, so may as well not bother to make any decisions or try to improve our lives

I don't believe in destiny. I also don't believe i am in control of my own fate. So many other factors affect my life from decisions I make to circumstances or the actions of others.

I just try to live in the moment and be the best person I can.

But who knows?

Yes you can alter the way it goes and how you get there by choice but I do wonder if everything is meant to be just as it is.

As long as that's good, then I'm happy with that.

I've spent many an hour pondering this question and I don't think I'll ever find an answer.

Reacting to a situation with the right attitude is the important thing. Shits gonna happen regardless!

Life throws stuff at you and you do what you can. You hope you are making the right choices and only time will tell in the end. Working hard works for some. Winging it seems to go well for others. Others still have no joy no matter what they do. Luck apparently plays a huge part in it all, so I guess there's no certainty.

How's that for covering all the bases and yet being vague enough that the splinters of the fence I am sitting on are firmly lodged twixt my cheeks!

i heard yesterday that there is a guy (philosopher) who actually had to be escorted everywhere coz he had the belief everything he did wasn't predicted and he would try to wander off cliffs coz he figured just coz it was thought he'd die doing that didn't mean it would happen.

shit, i'm crap with names, wish i could remember what he was called.

help:

What follows from incompatibilism?

If you cannot do anything other than what you do, then determinism is true.

If determinism is true, then you cannot do anything other than what you do.

If determinism is false, then you can do something other than what you do.
