Today I got into a heated "debate" with a friend on facebook about a couple calling their son Bear.

She and a few of her friends were saying how awful it was of the parents to choose a name like Bear and that it was their fault if he got bullied at school.

The people commenting were called Sylvia, Agnes, Pam, Pauline and Dollie.

Is it just me?

I think Bear and other unique names like Apple and Dweezil are much cooler. Stuff what society says!

P.S My son is called Red and the other kids in his class think its a cool name.

I think you should call your children (within reason) whatever you like & not give a stuff if it's cool, trendy or traditional.

But as a parent you do have a responsibility to make sure the name works & the kid won't have the piss ripped outta of him / her.

I doubt said child will need to worry about being bullied at school. As a celebrity they will be mixing with unusual names anyway

I'm not sure what surname they are going with, but if its his then it'll maybe cause a few chuckles till the novelty wears off.

There are worse names in the World. And they didn't rush in to naming him that as they waited a week to see what would suit him.

According to Radio 2 anyway....

My kids have unusual names...not weird but no one in the school has their names. They are happy with them...they suit them...so I think they are cool. Bear..yuk...Red...i know one kid given that name..which I thought was fine. A matter of good judgement I guess.

Maybe if we taught kids not to bully those that are different for whatever reason, we wouldn't be having this debate.

Well bear, like red, sounds like a nickname or foreign name to most people rather than a British first name.

I don't honestly think they will get bullied for it.

I think it looks unusual on a CV and that could go against them in some circumstances / jobs. Potentially those circumstances / jobs are not ones the parents would wish for the child anyway.

I don't see bullying being much of an issue. But you can't expect all human's not to make snap judgements on first impressions.

Well there's Bear Grylls. There's reality star Stephen Bear who goes by the name Bear, who all the teenagers like, so Bear isn't that bad.

I'd rather be called Bear than Apple.

Red is actually a pretty common name elsewhere in the world, it's a very popular name in China.

I love the unusual names for children. I always said if I had kids I'd call the girl Rain and the boy Hunter or Bowen
