... your washing machine!

Serious question... I've got a large number of items that are 'handwash only' and have always done so.

But the silk/handwash cycle button on the washing machine keeps staring at me - does anyone trust theirs to return such items clean and without damage?

oops, that was for diamonds comment

tempted with the pillowcase idea for the smaller items... its just the bigger things (shower curtains and window dressings that wouldn't fit - duvet cover?

Why not start of with something small that wouldnt really matter if it was damaged, but i have never had a problem with mine. Shower curtain might come out completely creased up unless it says on it handwash

On another washing machine question.

Are Fabsters happy to go out and leave their washing machine running?

I used to be till I heard a Fire Officer's tales of the number of washing machines going up in flames - even newish machines.

fold them before putting inside less creases and smaller

Scotland - Aberdeen

I have used the wool wash for silk - never had a problem (washed it on it's own though) and left to dry on coat hanger.

Also 95 degree cycle with bleach - perfect for shower curtain

Will give that a try... took them down earlier so will put in the machine shortly - hang them damp and watch the magically creases fall out - that's if they're not in pieces of course

Never leave anything switched on especially those plug in air fresheners.Lethal!! in the words of a good friend of mine who is a fire investigator.

If i didn't leave the house with the machine running, my washing pile would be ridiculous - it's on every morning before work, and usually on again in the evening... and if it goes boom floods the kitchen, any possessions that matter are in a fireproof cabinet, and everything else is covered in the house insurance.

After about a year a new black pair of jogging bottoms sorted out the pink pillow cases and turned them light gray.

Sorted!

I wash EVERYTHING ...including silk ball gowns. If things have to be dry cleaned ..it makes them so much dearer in the long term...and if you are careful.. it should work. Not had a disaster yet...;-)

They're in the machine as I type, with 4 mins left to run and my fingers firmly crossed - it'll make one weekly task alot quicker if it works!

You pay your monies you take your chance. Its a bit like asking if you would let a builder finger you in a blackout room. He may be gentle and have soft hands. And there and again they may be ruff as sandpaper!

Love the analogy!

I took my chance, it worked perfectly, sparkly, clean and now rehung so to answer my own question, I now trust my washing machine

Silk scuffs if its spun thread and so you have to be careful just like a builder and your lady bits. Hand washing is always bes but if you have a washer that is very very gentle you might be ok and it looks like you have been.

Care to try my builders hands in a dark room now

one has to make a tricky judgement here as there are hand wash items that do well in the machine but there are others which may required a dipping technique rather than the tumble of the machine, especially if there are beads or delicate trims on them.

Also dipping can avoid the need for ironing which I don't do and can sometimes spoil the look of the fabric, especially silk, which I have a lot of.
