what is it ?

How do you determine someone has it ? If inter_iewing for a role, what do you ask to establish it?

Difficult sometimes i can be the most sensible person ever and other times im the polar opposite but i like to think its because i dont stop and think rather than the fact that i dont know how to do stuff.

If i was inter_iewing someone for a job i guess i would of set some questions or tasks to prove to me to me that they have the level of common sense to do the job required.

I don't know if you could ask a question to establish if someone has common sense,it usually shows itself in various situations and how they're dealt with

Its normally when you some one just gets on with something or deals with a situation competently without having to get the rule book out every 5 minutes or asking their if what they're doing is the right thing

It can be hard to define I think. I can make sense of complete goobledegook, hold my own with the best of them, yet I struggled to give a shop assistant the right money the other day, I got confused with the coins.

She looked at me as if I was a right idiot...and she wasn't wrong!

Situations and how you deal with them would determine common sense.

A perfect instance of common sense, or the lack thereof, is the account of the two special constables who refused to go into a lake to save a drowning boy because it would put themselves in danger to do so.

Common sense should have dicated that if they couldn't swim then maybe they had a point. If they could swim they had a duty to assist. Common sense in this instance failed spectacularly and the lad drowned.

H & S so it seems...they have to wait for specialist teams to turn up.

Was this the one with ice in the lake or a different one?

Different one, I don't recall there being any mention of ice. The boy was flailing around and they refused to go in to help citing H&S guidelines about not being trained to rescue in water. It was such a tragedy to think that any sane person would have done the human thing and gone in. With or without being shackled by H&S.

Heard about the ice one ( obviously when it was icey ), thats why I asked was it the same one.

I am with you on this one, I can't see how anyone can stand and watch it if they can swim.....let's face it, there have been lots of people been saved from life threatening incidents from members of the public that didn't think of H & S first.

Common sense in that instance should have dicated that knowing she was on her own the emergency services should have dispatched another crew, and that knowing she was alone and the destination she was required to attend, she should not have answered the call.

A recent Fatal Accident Inquiry (in Kilmarnock?) centred around a woman who'd fallen down a disused mine shaft whilst out walking.

She was found, alive if only just, and the whole emergency apparatus - mine rescue, paramedics, fire and rescue, air ambulance etc swung into action.

All was going well till a fire officer arrived on scene, took charge and announced nobody was going down that hole on his watch.

The woman died.

You could also look at a different aspect of the drowning situation in that usually when people are drowning and you jump in to rescue, the first thing they will do is grab at you and usually push your head under water. People are strong when fighting for their lives. So you could end up with two deaths rather than one.

Sensible thing is always call for back up first, then look to throw them something to hold onto, or take some clothing off, jump in, swim close enough but not enough so they'll grab you and throw out the clothing so they can grab that and then pull along.

It depends on the situation and what's available. So jumping in without a thought is not always a sensible option.

In an inter_iew I would give a scenario and ask what they would do, and hope to see evidence of a thought process

i guess it is what it says on the box, for example common sense tells you to look before you step into the road and to bring me a cupo tea in bed in the morning.

Hopefully as it says "common" everybody has a supply of this.

I _iew common sense as the ability to think past the task or problem in front of your eyes and quickly determine the consequences of the action your about to take. The key part here is to first recognise the task or problem then to 'think past'. In my opinion H&S gives some people an excuse to not have to think past their 'action choices' for themselves and therefore be responsible for their decisions. Like the example of the Specials mentioned by Wishy.

I think we all have common sense, but at times we all lack common sense, the only humans that have never made a mistake are newborn babies.

Take Gerard Ratner the jeweller, you don't get to where he's got to in life without good common sense. Then he stands up and boasts that his jewellry is crap and kills his multi million pound business - a lack of basic common sense!

How do we get common sense? Through experience of life. The toddler who's always been able to walk directly under the dinner table grows and one day bangs it's head. If it gains a bit of common sense it walks round next time. How many of us still bang our heads on tables? We all have common sense, we just use it to differing degrees.

When I'm inter_iewing people I look for signs that they consider the consequences of their decisions and are willing to own and be responsible for their decisions.
