"One of the essays I had to write for my archaeology exam was very similar to this. One thing I said the tiny skeletons of cats, dogs, rodents etc buried in cloth (if it survived) would lead them to believe that we somehow revered them. Another thing was that the motorway system would lead them to conclude we had a very efficient transport system . There was much more but its all lost in the mists of time. The lecturer said she was giggling all the way through." Never thought of that. I guess the odd little hamster in a plastic box will baffle them ! As will plastic Darth Vader masks. Will they believe we worshipped him somehow?

The point of the essay I had to write and also (possibly inadvertently) your question here is to illustrate that all archaeology is interpretation of incomplete evidence rather than fact. However I'm sure you don't want your light hearted thread weighed down with the ramblings of an archaeological specimen.

Perhaps Stonehenge is nothing more than some landscaping to make it nice, and who knows, all that cave art is simply a teenager drawing on his wall thousands of years ago. I am however curious about those massive stone heads....is it Easter Island? What was that about !!

So for example during times of conflict evidence is often interpreted as war or conquest in more peaceful times it's interpreted as migration. Stonehenge has long been thought of a a ceremonial place but more recently they've suggested a place of healing. Cave art is another fascinating subject. Some of it is in places that they would have had to crawl through tiny spaces and burn primitive oil lamps in. So I don't think it was teen-agers although the preponderance of erect penises makes me wonder. All over Europe small figurines of women (Venus figurines) are found and my lecturer used to say it was prehistoric porn lol. Yeah...Easter island, no idea what that's about.

"In a thousand years I think most of my possessions (like me) will have long disintegrated.... but maybe people will ponder over a mysterious unknown figure who had 2 glass dildos, a collection of novelty mugs, and enough Newbridge Silver tree ornaments to decorate a small woodland... " It's about what survives though, it's quite unlikely that anything digital will survive without people or something maintaining digital data bases. In the UK there will be a lot of tarmac, concrete and bricks to dig up - whatever is excavating will probably find a lot of street graffiti and find that we collectively had a lot of interest in cocks and tits. As for me, my possessions outside of clothes and household items are mainly books tbh. A nice watch I bought and my grandad's watch. So if everything somehow were to be preserved they would probably wonder why I needed so many woolly jumpers and why I read so much :P

We dwell in our small modern caves and horde/collect obscure items. As much as I would like Babe Attenborough to present us to the world via a documentary, it might spell extinction for our species.
