"I knew someone who agreed to hand paint a weekly consignment of ceramic miniature cottages on a commission basis ........ I seem to remember we worked it out that she was being paid about 45 pence an hour for her efforts ![]() I guess that was a forerunner to our gig economy. O did a quick search after posting this and most of these 'from the comfort of your own armchair jobs' were scams. If work was sent back - painted cottage, addressed envelopes etc, they typically failed quality standards and went unpaid - even the 45p an hour.

"When I met my husband his mum used to stuff envelopes. Everyone had to do a certain amount before they were allowed out. Some evenings, when we didn't go out, we sat stuffing them for hours. No idea how much she was paid for it. " At least I'm relieved that it wasn't all a scam, however backbreaking and low paid that it may have been. A few years ago these envelope stuffing ads were prolific. It crossed my mind today that they'd disappeared from life. Did email spam take over from it?
