Colston Hall renamed

Bristol Music Trust have decided to rename Colston Hall because it is named after a philantropist slave trader Edward Colston.

Whilst i find the slave trade abhorrent, i also do not believe in judging those of the past but modern standards. Edward died in 1721 and slavery would not be abolished for another 86 years. He undoubtedly did a lot of good for Bristol, he founded hospitals, schools and churches. He was also an MP.

I know some people will agree with the decision but it strikes me as white people too embrassed to own our history, for better or worse.

You've got a point. Many people were instrumentall in shaping the future society. Just about everyone in history had some area that would be shameful by modern standards? If they were trying to glamorise his activities fair enough, but no one is?

As a resident of Reading i wonder if one day they will wipe off all the references to the biscuit merchant Palmer who will no doubt be blamed for profiting from the obesity crisis that one day bought down our beloved NHS or some cock and bull story like that

the thing with "renaming" the building, no matter what its called, locals will always call it the colston hall.

When they are building Cabots circus and kicking about names for it, merchants circus was one of the names and it did set quite a fire a light, then it was pointed out about areas like "Blackboy hill" ect ect.

Yes, bristol does have a history which has strong ties to slavery, but which major cities don't?

Bristol also has connections with Pirates as well... but with all the bad in the past there is also good....accept the past has happend, learn from the mistakes and move on and up from it

Exactly, i actually want to learn from the slavery experience. In a society that considered themselves rational and enlightened, a morally indefensible position was defended for many years using rational sounding arguements. That problem is alive and kicking today.

The PC brigade going over the top again they wanted to pull down a statue some time ago.

It's history good or bad it should not be changed.

It's all part of what has shaped the present and part of our evolution and should be left as it is.

what makes me chuckle mostly, is they have rebuilt the matthew, a boat that during its time, it would of carried slaves and yet "let it sail"

however if you are looking for an interesting lesson in Slavery, they open the tunnels up during the summer holidays that lead from the old dock under st mary redcliffe.... the tunnels they took the slaves through and into the church where they were registered and held for a while. it is about an hour and it generally is quite informative and you get to experience how they were kept, albeit for a short time

Thanks for the tip. I would stress that the venue have decided to do this themselves. According to the BBC a local petition gathered a whopping 2,000 signatures in favour but most locals are overwhelmingly negative about the change. The Colston name remains at local schools which are ranked some of the best in the country.

If the good people of Bristol want to erase the slave trade history then they will need to rename half the schools and roads in the city.

It'll always be the Colston Hall to anyone that has ever been there. I'm guessing they want to remove to the name to spare any commercial sponsors a possible ethical dilemma over the name and hence be able to leverage the best (i.e. most financially lucrative!) commercial deal

It works the other way on judging people from the past with current standards - we feel compassion for those jailed for being gay and campaign for their 'crimes' to be quashed, understand deserters who had PTSD etc.

But we're promoting one and re-writing the history of the other. In both cases we should be looking at what happened and applying the lessons to the present society. Not trying to revise history to fit the current fashion.

Listening on the radio last night, they said that there was a misperception about the name, so they have to change it.

Surely they should address the misperception? Or should we put an ambulance at the bottom of a cliff, rather than a fence at the top?

I've been going there fifty years, it will always be the Colston hall, will they change the name of the road it's on?

You can't change the name in people mind though. It will be the Colston hall for a couple of decades yet.

Blackboy hill....

Whiteladies road...

The PC crowd think it is offensive, most often white middle class men. It's part of our history, I actually find it offensive to try and hide/ignore it

Better knock the pyramids down in Egypt, I bet all those workers weren't willingly building them!

The clot who led the Cecil Rhodes protest WA here under a Rhodes scholarship!

If man learns from the mistakes of the past, surely whitewashing history means that those in the future will have nothing to learn from.

A lot of bad thing happened in the past, leave them there as facts, reminders of our predecessors mistakes, so that we can not make them again.

The workers on the pyramids were all voluntary. They saw it as their religious devotion and a worthy job.

Also no one says pull the Colston hall down so your argument is a non-sequiteur

The point about learning from history is not invalidated by a popular misconception over the pyramids. I'm not sure what overarching point you were trying to make?

I am not making an over-arching point. I am correcting inaccuracies in a discussion in the latter part and in the earlier part, introducing the idea that highlighting a fallacy followed by an illogical conclusion maybe doesn't move the discussion in a useful direction.
