when I was a boy (oh so many years ago) sirens were a group of seductive women who lured unsuspecting sailors with their enchanting singing and music, causing the happless seafarers to run aground.

This past two weeks sirens are what have been keeping me awake as the fire brigade, police and ambulances hare past my hotel with their noisy sirens, on their way to tackle the city's unsavoury nightlife
