Brands v Supermarket own goods

It was on the internet recently about a couple who bought a multipack of Aldi Snackrite hoops and inside were packs of KP Hula Hoops.

So, obviously both are made in the same factory, just the packaging is different and the price.

Do you buy only brand name goods or supermarket own brands?

Aldi's version of Skips are identical to the real thing. Think they're called Melts.

Their Hoops are indeed the same as Hula Hoops.

I used to be a brand snob.

Started using Aldi and Lidl and halved my food shop prices.

Tried their versions of branded goods and mostly stuck with their versions.

Barring the odd thing, I am pretty sure they are the same supplier with different labels anyway!

Lidl chocolate digestives are as good as the McVities ones and I think they are probably actually the same.

I don't have issues with own brand/different brand items

Thorntons don't just make chocolates for themselves so own brand can be exactly the same.

Aldi's roast chicken is the best I've found recently.

Love aldi, the only thing that irks me slightly about their advertising is when they do their baskets versus a basket from say...asda, they use name brands rather than asda own brand, so it shows a huge saving, its not really fair

Most of my shopping comes from Lidl now. Only a few of things I won't compromise on, Yorkshire tea, Fairy liquid and marmite I think

Prefer supermarket own to many branded. They alter the recipes and make things taste nicer. Branded costs more and many have lost their brilliance. It's also cheaper. I do buy branded deodorant though.

I always still buy fairy liquid and also washing powder I only buy branded.

I work for Muller and also corner yogurts have the same fruit and yogurt as the Muller products just made at different sites with different packaging. Most of the time when a supermarket trials a idea and it works the brand will then use the idea as it's own on a mass level.

This was on The Weight Stuff for two days running, the manufactures claimed the recipes are different although made in the same factory. Many products from hoola hoops to cars are fundamentally the same just the packaging different.

That said I prefer original hoops hoops and would buy a Toyota Aygo rather than the Citroen badged one.

Supermarket brands are in most cases the same as the brands. But that does not go for supermarket basic items.....some are OK but a lot are bloody awful.

I've been shopping at Aldi for years and years (helps that I live next door).

I sometimes have to go elsewhere if I want something like a specific spice. They don't stock harissa for example.

I do use their washing up liquid (it's won awards) and more recently their laundry detergent and it does what it's supposed to.

I have even got some makeup from Aldi and it's okay too.

We only shop at Aldi or Lidl these days. We've more than halved our shopping bills with clever buying and cooking strategies.

It would be interesting to do a blind taste test of the items you really like to see if you could tell the ones you prefer

Lidl have a lot of branded stuff too .....aldi do too ....

But all the basic own brand stuff is good too ....

My friend wont go into either shop .... but then shes a snob ....

Food wise I go for shop not brand but cola has to be coca cola I can tell the difference here original has such a nice taste the cola from most bars in The tap is cheap stuff how I know this.

I ordered a cola by accident I wanted a bottle and the bloke who served me give me a pint instead and he would not exchange so I had both and noticed the difference.

I asked my friend who works in the bar and he said he should have exchanged it and the sometimes use cheaper cola in pubs or sometimes it is real stuff with a lot of water added..

Exactly, I used to work at Hazelwoods Pickles when it had a factory in Derby. All they did was stop the line for a few minutes, change the labels , then carry on. The only line that was entirely separate was the Heinz one, all the rest of the sauces and pickles were exactly the same

I have worked in 2 food production factories in my life,whitworths and saxby's,in whitworths the only difference between products is the packaging, saxby's was a little different, a slight variation on ingredients a bit more salt/sugar etc,supermarkets would send out an inspector,usually from sainsbury or tesco, if their criteria was met and the contract continued the smaller supermarkets would follow their lead and not bother sending their own inspectors,maybe a bit different now as this was a few years ago.

supermarket own branded, but you do need to shop around and try own branded items, as some are terrible were fit for the bin after one taste, some are identical tho.

most of the ones i found best were asda's own brand chosen by you range, although few aldi and lidl products are good.

You can't beat M & S for their own brand stuff, or Morrisons. Iceland is great for price and quality...

M&S Weetabix is tastier, better than the real thing. Sainsbury's and M&S Ketchup, Baked Beans, Tinned Spaghetti or Hoops are also nicer than branded...however, Cross & Blackwell Baked Beans are lush...

My House

Own brands can't quite match the quality of named brands when it comes to cereal. No one makes Frosties like Kellogg's, no one makes Sugar Puffs better than Monster Foods and no one makes muesli better than Alpan. Heinz still make the best baked beans etc.

We have a Lidl 5 mins walk away and we do use it but I buy my named brands at one of the big 3 supermarkets.

Get tools n stuff from lidl/aldi when they're on offer.....i can't break them any quicker than so called good brands, in fact some outlast by a long way and my tools take some abuse

I check online prices then shop at the cheapest place. Own brands usually are good but I use branded shampoo, bubble bath, washing up liquid and toothpaste.
