Hoping a few of the other geeks here can help me out with a little tech project?

I've recently acquired an old Toshiba Satellite L200 laptop. I have the original install discs, but despite trying it twice- it runs soooooooooo slow!- quite a lot of bloatware as usual

I have a Macbook from work, but it doesn't have a CD drive, so i pretty much only want the Tosh to digitise CD's, manage my ipod contents and keep a backup of my iphone....so i was thinking about a Linux install.

I've never had much to do with Linux, not really had much to do with PC's for about 6-7 years, but do know my way round a pc and software fairly well.

I've had a nose on the Linux site, but i'm not totally sure what the best approach to doing this is- different Linux builds, what to do about laptop drivers and can i actually install itunes or similar to manage the music and phone backup (don't fancy using the work unit to backup, it occasionally goes out with other people for use)?

Any advice, pointers to other tech sites, other options etc would be mighty fine

Ubuntu seems very user friendly and amongst the most popular Linux distros .. that might be worth a look?

As for drivers, unless the laptop hardware uses very low end or obscure components .. you shouldn't experience too much difficulty.

Not quite sure if iTunes make a version for Linux.. it's generally only popular in the west amongst the very thrifty who don't want to pay for Windows licenses or those who enjoy to have tinker under the hood, so to speak.

"How to geek forum you may have tryed already..."

Thanks all- have just had a look round the geek forum, very useful- may look at the possibility of a windows risc install instead
