My mate has just emigrated and sent me lots of messages on skype it looks like paradise.

Has anyone been or emigrated and come back and why ???.

Has anyone been on hols any pit falls or plusses to look out for.

Where to go where to stay away from.

Hey, I go a few times a year, but typically only Sydney and the Gold Coast.

I never want to come home, it's one of the happiest most stress free places I have ever been. And parts of it are truly paradise.

Not really cheap out there but then it's not cheap here.

I have been in summer and winter and it's been lovely both times.

No pit falls from my point of view.

Thank you......i am considering going later in the year when he is settled so looking at options and listening to people that have been and learning .

A couple of years ago I went for two weeks. A few days in Sydney, a few days in Adelaide then a week staying at friend's in Perth and the south West coast. A brilliant time.

The biggest thing to overcome is the vast distances to travel.

I traveled round oz a few years back, loved every minute of it. But Melbourne has to be the best city for me went back last year and stayed for a month love the way of life over there.

It's amazing, I love the Hervey Bay Area, and Fraser Island etc. Then the whit Sunday islands, amazing place.

Sydney was ok but I prefer the quieter areas.

The beaches around surfers paradise are amazing, just down from surfers there's a very quiet beach called nobby beach we loved it.

Go explore you will fall in love like everyone else does.

Yes you need a car.

Tropical North Queensland is simply stunning, definitely paradise. Cape Tribulation beach - where the Great Barrier Reef meets the Tropical Rainforest is stunning.

Sydney is my favourite major city and blows NY out of the water imho.

Worth a road trip is the Great Ocean Road on the Southern coast, if you get the chance head to Phillip Island for the penguin parade.

On the East coast as already mentioned elsewhere Fraser Island is worth a visit for the sand dunes and wild dingoes, and on the West coast Monkey Mia is worth a visit for the dolphins and dugongs.

The interior is hot, dry and vast! A tick box is Uluru but I would spend most of the time around the coasts to be honest.

Just back myself........ Loved every minute of it. Started in Perth, Melbourne, Sydney and cairns before heading home. No matter how long you go its never enough. Sydney i fell in love with but the highlight of the trip was heading out to the barrier reef.......a must for everyone

West Wales and Cardiff

It's a great place, as in New Zealand in different ways.

I know people who live there and love it, but I know people who've ended up really wanting to come home.

Having spoken to friends, I know there are downsides. These aren't people who took a punt out of the blue - they're married to Aussies, have kids raised there etc.

It is very beautiful, but once you're life is there and the day-to-day stuff builds, it can feel different.

I'm happiest walking in the mountains on a winter day, so I'm happy enough in my own beautiful corner of the world

I lived abroad as a child and when it came to my siblings and I reaching the age of secondary education my parents wanted to settle somewhere permanently.

My dad wanted to live in Australia but my mum wanted to come back to England as her family are all here so it was to England we came.

My mum asked me the other day whether I would have preferred to have lived in Australia. Having not lived there, I couldn't answer.

I've been on holiday there but many, many years ago.

Sydney I love, I like staying in Manley and getting the ferry over to the city. The Blue Mountains are good to visit on the train.

If you can go out to an island. There are loads. Heron, Lord Howe and the Whitsundays are fantastic.

Australia Zoo I thought was well worth a visit.

A road trip is good as you come across little places you'd otherwise miss. You can't believe how empty the roads are sometimes.

I've only done the East Coast to date, but fancy adding Perth into the mix next time I go.

Yes of course your right, everywhere has a bit of tack. I just didn't really see it in oz, just took it as I found it.

It was just a great trip with my kids, lots of memory making.

I went over for a few weeks visited Melbourne Sydney and Cairns.

Absolutely stunning as mentioned it isn't cheap was lucky as the exchange between the £ and Aus$ was good.

But as mentioned lots of beautiful beaches islands and rainforests to visit. Had to get internal flights between cities as everything is spread apart.

I liked the way of life especially having gas BBQ's in public parks / beaches, free to use for everyone and people treat with respect wouldn't find that over here.

But if you have a friend down there make the trip whilst you can. Only thing is the flight from the UK is a good 24 hours.

Been a few times,

Usually stay outside Sydney on the brisbane river at Erina or Terrigal.

Yeh, they have problems like anywhere else but the people seem to have a different outlook on how to deal with the shit life throws at you..

The blue mountains are lovely, we'll worth spending a week up there, especially in summer as it's a little cooler..

We went to Blair Atholl which is about an hour outside Sydney and visited woollongong and port Steven and the blue Mountains. They are all lovely places. Next place we will be visiting is Tasman to visit family

I was there for 8 months about a decade ago. It's a lovely country. I only did the east coast with the odd trip inland a bit for occasional work on farms (never lasted long as there was never much to do in the small towns and I craved being back near the coast and action).

Sydney was my favourite by far by Melbourne was nice too. I found it relatively easy on the wallet to live (although it was over a decade ago so things have probably changed) - I got a job in Sydney and was able to accumulate money fairly well. The standard of living over there is great - very active lifestyles and nice big houses.

I'd happily live there.

It's a lovely place and I'll happily go there on vacation again some day, but I don't think I'd want to live there - in fact we've talked about it in the past and have specifically excluded it as a place to look for work....

It's hard to really explain why. It's politics are a bit too far removed from my own (especially when it comes to censorship and speech laws - but I may be more sensitive to that as an American). Also, it's a lovely place with great nature links, but it lacks the history of Europe. If I wanted great nature with a lack of history I'd sooner live in the US.

But just like anywhere, your own fit in living there would highly depend on your own interests and what you want from the place you live. Go and visit for a while and decide whether it would suit you.

Yeah, that's kinda how friends I have there feel.

They do like it there, but miss the patchwork of European countries.

I've known two couples who were banged on relentlessly about how amazing a place it was for about two years. Both were home within five saying they'd had enough.

Don't get me wrong - I do think it's a great place. I just a bit weary of hearing Ex-pats going on!

It was particularly bad in NZ - lovely, lovely place. Wouldn't choose to live there!

I did a tour of OZ with my old gf and we fond it very easy to find work. Whilst people have said it's expensive we found the opposite. If you want to spend money, it is a tourist destination so places will obviously suck your money dry, though if you budget and have an idea of what you want to do, then you'll have more than enough to live on. If you look in tourist brochures which are freely available, you can get discounts for attractions or restaurants where 1 person eats free or get 50% off.

The East coast is built on tourism though the West Coast is absolutely beautiful. The Bungle Bungles, Ningaloo Reef, The Karijini Park, The Kimberly and 80 mile beach, too much to mention and compared to the East was far less a tourist destination.

With employment, we had working visas and found it very easy to find work. The set-up was nothing like here. Agencies covered all areas, you walked in they took qualifications, interests etc and work was pretty much immediate. It only became scarce in the upper Northern Territory. Whether is was labouring, office or semi professional we only ever stayed in one place long enough to earn enough money to help us travel.
